Laviolette and Sullivan named to coach US Olympic hockey team

Providence, RI - Former Providence Bruins' head coaches Peter Laviolette and Mike Sullivan have been named coaches for the 2006 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team, it was announced by USA Hockey. Laviolette will be the head coach, while Sullivan will serve as his assistant.

Laviolette, 40, spent two seasons as the head coach in Providence from 1998-00. In his first season, the Franklin, MA native led the Providence Bruins to their first Calder Cup after going 15-4 in the playoffs and 56-15-4 during the regular season. That same year Laviolette was named AHL Coach of the Year. The following season he guided Providence back to the Eastern Conference Finals before being named the assistant coach for the Boston Bruins.

Laviolette served as the New York Islanders head coach for two seasons from 2001-03 and currently is the head coach for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Sullivan, 37, spent one season as the head coach for the Providence Bruins. During the 2001-02 season, the Marshfield, MA native led Providence to a regular season North Division Championship with a 41-17-9-4 record, before being called-up to Boston as an assistant coach. Sullivan returned during the playoffs, before being named head coach of the Boston Bruins to start the 2003-04 season. Sullivan currently remains Boston's head coach.

The 2005-06 season opens up at home at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Friday, October 14th at 7:05 p.m. against the Portland Pirates.
