Late Tosaint Ricketts winner gives 'Caps 1-0 win
May 8, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release
VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC returned to BC Place to kick off their May home stretch with a 1-0 victory against Canadian rivals Toronto FC on Sunday afternoon at BC Place.
The 'Caps started things off with an opportunity inside the sixth minute created by winger Cristian Dájome, who made a pass from the left side to his Colombian compatriot Déiber Caicedo. Caicedo's footwork inside the box led to a chance saved by goalkeeper Alex Bono.
Toronto FC were given a penalty in the 35th minute on a handball call after video review. Alejandro Pozuelo stepped up for the shot, but 'Caps goalkeeper Thomas Hasal dove to his left to keep the score blank.
Sartini's side pushed on with its pressure minutes later, as Ryan Gauld's pass found Javain Brown in the final third, the fullback then crossed it to Caicedo for an opportunity saved in the 40th minute.
Starting in the second half, Gauld's through pass to Caicedo led to another opportunity to Dájome, who shot the ball over the top of the net in the 47th minute.
The Blue & White then continued to find its rhythm, as Caicedo crossed a ball to forward Brian White inside the box, but his diving header flew right past the far side of the post in the 54th minute.
Later on in the half, goalkeeper Thomas Hasal was forced to come out of the match with a hand injury, making way for Cody Cropper who made his Whitecaps FC debut.
In the 73rd minute, Cropper made a save off a Jordan Perruzza header to keep the game 0-0.
In the dying stages, a quick counter attack was organized by Gauld, leading to forward Lucas Cavallini passing a ball inside the box to substitute Tosaint Ricketts, who scored a late winner in the 90th minute of the match.
