Late Surge Pushes Dallas Wings Past Chicago Sky 87-79 in Season Opener

Arlington, TX - The Dallas Wings opened the 2024 WNBA regular season with an 87-79 victory over the visiting Chicago Sky Wednesday night at a sold-out College Park Center in Arlington, Texas. Arike Ogunbowale scored 14 of her game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter to lead the comeback effort for the Wings (1-0).
Chicago (0-1) led by 10 late in the opening quarter and led by three, 43-40, going into halftime. After Dallas held a 22-19 advantage in the third quarter, the teams entered the final frame knotted at 62-62. That's when the Wings found their groove.
Trailing by five, 69-64, with 7:54 to go, Ogunbowale took over, scoring seven of the Wings' next nine points to knot the game at 75-75 with under three minutes to go. Natasha Howard gave Dallas the lead, 77-75, off a nine-foot jumper with 2:31 to go, before Maddy Siegrist buried a dagger of a three-pointer with 1:56 left, giving the Wings a five-point cushion. Ogunbowale scored seven points over the final 94 seconds to seal the win.
Howard finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds and five assists in her 36 minutes on the floor. Teaira McCowan contributed 18 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks for the Wings, notching a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) by the end of the first half alone. Siegrist finished with 13 points off 5-of-8 shooting in 18 minutes off the bench.
Marina Mabrey led the way for the visiting Sky, scoring 19 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field. Angel Reese added 12 points on 5-of-14 shooting for the Sky in her WNBA regular season debut.
Dallas shot .451 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line on the night. Chicago was limited to .392 from the field, .294 from three and .593 from the free-throw line. The Wings tallied 12 blocks and seven steals, with 60 of their 87 points on the night (69-percent) scored in the paint.
The Wings and Sky will meet once again on Saturday night, with tipoff at College Park Center slated for 7 p.m. CT. The game will air on Bally Sports Southwest and NBA TV.
The Wings' next game comes on Saturday, May 18 at 7 p.m. CT at home against the Sky. The game will air on NBATV. The Wings previously announced the game was sold out, marking the fourth consecutive sellout at College Park Center.
