Late Steamers' Rally Falls Short in Morehead

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C "" The Steamers late rally was cut short in the top of the ninth and the Morehead City Marlins hung on for a 4-2 win to snap the Steamers 12-game win streak on Friday Night at Big Rock Stadium.

Adam Bray (South Dakota State University) made his second start of the season after arriving in Edenton a little late this summer. Calvin Rayburn made his fourth start of the season for the Morehead City Marlins.

Edenton, in the top of the second inning cracked the scoreboard after loading the bases with two outs. Chase Harris (University of New Mexico) hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop Dalton Britt. Britt fumbled with the ball before throwing wide of the first base bag. Harris was safe on the throwing error and Tyler Qualls (Louisiana Tech University) came home to score to make it 1-0 steamers.

In the bottom of the second against Bray, Morehead City, with two outs and the bases loaded, got a two-run single from Dalton Britt, atoning for his earlier defensive error to make the game 2-1 in favor of the Marlins.

The Marlins added a run on back-to-back one out doubles from Ryan Muno and Chase McDonald in the bottom of the third to make it a 3-1 Marlin lead.

After four frames without a hit, the Steamers strung two together in the top of the seventh against Rayburn. Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) drove in Nick Thompson (East Carolina Univeristy) to cut the lead to just one run at 3-2 Marlins.

Bray was lifted after four innings pitched, five hits allowed, three runs, he walked one batter and struck out four. Jeremy Bales (Lee University) pitched two perfect innings and Beau Beaudreau came in and pitched a perfect seventh inning to keep the score 3-2 Marlins.

Rayburn, for Morehead city, pitched seven strong innings, giving up five hits and two runs (one earned); he walked two Steamers, struck out nine and hit three.

William Prince came in for Morehead City and got a double play ball to end the Steamers threat in the top of the eighth and Ryan Cranmer hit his sixth home run of the season, a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 4-2 lead heading to the ninth.

Prince remained in the game for the top of the ninth and Edenton got a lead-off walk and a bunt single to put two runners on with no outs. The rally stalled there as Thompson was unable to get a sacrifice bunt down and Dominic Fratantuono (Towson University) was thrown out trying to steal third base. Nick Miller (University of Northern Colorado) then struck out to end the game and snap the Steamers 12 game winning streak.

Rayburn earned the win for his seven innings of two-run baseball, improving to 1-1 on the season. Bray took his first loss of the season, falling to 1-1. Prince earned his first save of the season.

Nick Miller and Tyler Qualls both had two hits each in the loss and Hampton had the Steamers only RBI.

Edenton travels home and welcomes in the Petersburg Generals tomorrow with first pitch at 7:00 p.m.
