Morehead City Marlins News Release
Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins defeated the Edenton Steamers by a score of 4-2 to halt the Steamers win streak at 12. Calvin Rayburn tossed a gem on the mound, while Dalton Britt, Chase McDonald and Ryan Cranmer provided some timely hitting for the Marlins who extended their win streak to two games on a beautiful Friday night at Big Rock Stadium.
Despite ultimately losing the ballgame, the Steamers jumped out a 1-0 lead when Chase Harris reached on a Morehead City error with the bases loaded. Tyler Qualls came home to score, but Rayburn got Nick Thompson to fly out to end the inning and keep the Edenton lead at 1-0.
The Edenton lead didn't last long as the Marlins jumped right back in the home half of the second. Dalton Britt roped a two-RBI single down the right field line, giving the Marlins a 2-1 lead after two innings of play. Chase McDonald then found the left-centerfield gap for an RBI double to extend the Marlins lead to 3-1 after three.
The Steamers made things interesting in the top half of the seventh as they picked up a run on an RBI single off the bat of Josh Hampton. However, Hampton was thrown at at second trying to leg out a double and Trent Miller struck out to end the inning with the Marlins still on top 3-2. Ryan Cranmer closed the door on the Steamers with a long solo blast over the left field wall in the bottom half of the eighth, making it a 4-2 game.
Rayburn was credited with the win and moves to 1-1 on the year. The tall right-hander tossed seven innings allowing just one earned run and striking out nine. William Prince picked up his first save of the year and the Marlins improved to 10-11, while the Steamers fell to 16-5. The Marlins travel to Fayetteville on Saturday, but return home for a showdown with Team USA at Big Rock Stadium on Sunday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM and plenty of tickets are still available.
