Syracuse Mets News Release

Durham, NC - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, were defeated 5-4 by the Durham Bulls on Friday night. Despite trailing 4-3 heading to the bottom of the eighth, the Bulls scored two runs against the Chiefs bullpen to pick up the win. Chiefs starter Matt Chico made his third straight start throwing at least seven innings and over seven on Friday, he allowed three earned runs on seven hits. The Bulls scored two in the first off Chico on a two-run home run by Dan Johnson. Syracuse answered back in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Luis Ordaz to score Justin Maxwell who had led off the inning with a walk. Heading to the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Chiefs trailed 2-1. In the bottom of the fifth Desmond Jennings, who had hit just one home run all season, hit his second home run of the year to left field to push the Durham lead to 3-1 after five innings. The Chiefs were silent in the sixth and the seventh, but got a three-run homer from Jason Botts in the eighth inning to take the lead at 4-3. However, the Syracuse bullpen would not be able to hold the lead in the bottom of the inning. Ron Villone was the first pitcher on in relief of Matt Chico and he retired the first batter he faced. However the next three reached base on two walks and a bunt single which loaded the bases for catcher Dioner Navarro. Villone hit Navarro with a pitch allowing the tying run to score. Josh Wilkie then entered the game to pitch but allowed an RBI single to Joe Dillon and the Bulls were ahead for good at 5-4. The Chiefs went down in order in the ninth inning against Winston Abreu who picked up his 13th save. On Saturday, the Chiefs and Bulls will play game two of their four game series. Jeff Mandel (4-5, 4.80) is scheduled to start for the Chiefs against Jeremy Hellickson (11-3, 2.56) for the Bulls. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
