Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - After leading throughout most of the game, the Traverse City Beach Bums(8-14) gave up two in the ninth, dropping to the Schaumburg Boomers(9-14), 2-1.

The Beach Bums's Kramer Champlin and Schaumburg's Gunnar Kines, locked up in a classic pitcher's duel tonight. After a scoreless first three and a half innings, which yielded only four hits between both teams, Jose Vargas led off the inning, reaching second on a throwing error. Will Kengor promptly stepped up and launched an RBI triple to the right-centerfield gap, plating Vargas, giving the Bums a 1-0 lead.

Champlin was hit by a line drive in the seventh inning and Luke Barker came in to replace him. In his 1 1/3 innings, he was perfect, holding the Boomers scoreless. Closer Andrew Brockett came in to start the ninth inning, trying for his second save, but Mark Nelson ripped a line drive down the right field line that barely cleared the wall for a home run for his first of the season, tying the game. Dusty Robinson followed with a double over the head of left fielder Ryan Bottger. He was then replaced on second by Chris Robinson. Two batters later, Shawn Payne hit a fly ball to left. Bottger charged the ball but Robinson, who moved to third on a grounder, was able to score on the sacrifice fly, giving Schaumburg the lead.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Giarcarlo Brugnoni reached first on the third error of the game by the Boomers' defense. Brian Portelli grounded the ball slowly towards the mound and was thrown out at first, but Brugnoni made it safely to second. Casey Rodrigue came in to pinch run for Brugnoni but he was stranded as the Gaby Juarbe grounded out to end the game.

Dexter Price earned the win for Schaumburg going the last 1 2/3 innings, improving to 2-2. Starter Gunnar Kines went 7 1/3 innings, allowing just the unearned run on three hits and a walk and struck out four. Bums starter Kramer Champlin went 6 2/3 innings, allowing just five hits, and struck out five. Brockett picks up his first loss of the season, dropping to 2-1.
