Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners recorded their fourth consecutive win on Wednesday afternoon at GCS Ballpark in Sauget behind stellar starting pitching by Josh Kimborowicz and a homer and a triple by Nolan Earley, blanking the Gateway Grizzlies 4-0 to clinch the series.
Kimborowicz ran into trouble early as the Grizzlies got the game's first run into scoring position in each of the first two innings. But the right-hander would use his defense to get out of the jams, inducing two inning-ending double plays to keep the game scoreless. In the third inning, the Miners broke out on top with three runs. With men at first and second and two outs, Craig Massey popped a ball up toward second baseman Steve Pascual. Pascual was called off by the shortstop Logan Davis, who ended up dropping the baseball, allowing one run to score to make it 1-0.
Earley came up and three pitches later lined a triple to deep right-center field, making the score 3-0 after three innings. Kimborowicz would keep the Gateway bats off balance nearly the rest of the way, recording two more inning-ending double plays along the way. He received more support in the sixth inning, when Earley blasted his second home run of the season to left-center, a solo shot, for a 4-0 Miners advantage.
Gateway would not seriously threaten the Miners' lead, as Kimborowicz improved to 4-0 on the season, pitching into the ninth inning and being taken out after allowing a leadoff walk and a two-out single in the last inning. With the tying run now on deck, Jake Cose was summoned from the bullpen, and the right-hander recorded the final out on a grounder to first for his fourth save of the season.
The Miners will go for the sweep of the Grizzlies on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. to conclude the first leg of their seven-game road trip. Jarett Miller will take the ball for the Miners against Gateway southpaw Corey Kimes.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions.
