May 3, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels led 2-0 entering the ninth inning in their series opener against Quad Cities but saw the River Bandits put up a three-spot in the final frame to steal a 3-2 final. Cedar Rapids has now lost four in a row, falling to 15-7, but still holds a 2.0 game lead in the West Division standings. The Kernels went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and struck out nine times in the final four frames.
Cody Laweryson was brilliant in his second start of the season, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings of two-hit ball. The righthander walked none and struck out four while throwing 34 strikes on 49 pitches. Bobby Milacki worked a pair of perfect innings, striking out three, while Melvi Acosta picked up his fourth hold with 2.0 scoreless.
The lone Kernels scoring came in the fifth, opened by a Jair Camargo leadoff single. Wander Javier laced an RBI double down the leftfield line, then three batters later Willie Joe Garry Jr. blasted a run-scoring double of his own off the right field wall.
Quad Cities drew a pair of walks to open the ninth, then a perfectly executed hit-and-run double put two men in scoring position with none retired and a fresh one-run ball game. A strikeout was followed by a two-run bloop single into shallow center, then the Kernels went down 1-2-3 in the ninth to seal the heartbreaking loss.
Game two is set for Wednesday with a 6:35 p.m. CT first pitch at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
