Late Rally Propels Blue Crabs to Victory

(Waldorf, MD. July 22nd 2015) ---The five game losing streak that the Blue Crabs have suffered at the hands of the Bluefish is over as Southern Maryland handed Bridgeport the 4-2 defeat.

Southern Maryland scored first in the bottom of the first on a Jovan Rosa RBI single to score Fred Lewis to make it 1-0. In the top of the fourth Bridgeport put up two runs to take the lead. Josh Prince singled and later stole second. Wilson Batista then singled in Prince to make it 1-1. Two batters later, Andres Rodriguez ripped a double to left to score Batista to make it 2-1.

The Blue Crabs defense was spectacular tonight making two phenomenal plays in the middle of the game. In the top of the sixth, with Andres Rodriguez at the plate, and runners at first and third. The runner at first Jobduan Morales took off for second. The catcher Craig Maddox came up throwing to second base. Jake Optiz caught the baseball, and threw to Zach Wilson who ran down Morales before the runner at third Dotel could score to end the inning.

Fast forward to the top of the eight inning, Wellington Dotel would ground one back to RHP Cody Eppley who fielded it cleanly and threw on to first base for the out. The runner Josh Prince attempted to take third base, with Zach Wilson firing one to the third base bag to get Prince who was tagged out. Off that momentum, Southern Maryland scored the winning runs in the bottom of the frame. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jamar Walton singled to center to score two runs to make it 4-2.

Bridgeport put two runners on in the top of the ninth, but Erik Hamren shut things down with the save, and secured the victory for the Blue Crabs. RHP Jake Hale started the game but left after 2.2 innings, with a minor finger injury. The combination of Korpi, Santos, Eppley, and Hamren held the Bluefish to just two runs. Fred Lewis had another good game at the plate, going 2-3 with two runs scored, and starting the rally in the bottom of the eighth.

Southern Maryland looks to capitalize on tonight's win in game four of the series tomorrow. The first pitch is set for 7:05 P.M at Regency Furniture Stadium. RHP Cody Scarpetta (0-0, 2.18) will throw for Bridgeport, while RHP Daryl Thompson (3-1, 1.59) will toss for Southern Maryland.
