Late Rally Not Enough, Cats Lose Third Straight 5-4

EDINBURG, Texas - The Fort Worth Cats were unable to fight back from the big hole they dug themselves into against the Edinburg Roadrunners, and The Cats lost their third straight game after losing to the Edinburg Roadrunners 5-4 Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

With this current losing streak, the Cats now have fallen to third place in the division. They are a half-game back from Edinburg and a full game behind Rio Grande Valley.

Miguel Martinez (4-2) picked up the win after pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on four hits with eight strike outs.

The Roadrunners (17-12) got on the board in the bottom of the first with RBI singles from Wilmer Pino and Carlos Hereaud that made it 2-0.

A fielding error in the bottom of the third allowed Stantrel Smith to score from second and then later in the inning an RBI ground out allowed Vincent Blue to score pushing the Edinburg lead 4-0.

Martinez who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning allowed four straight two out hits that allowed the Cats (16-12) to score three runs cutting the Roadrunners lead 4-3.

The Fort Worth Cats scored on a two-run double by Chad Gabriel and an RBI double by Jose Ruiz in the sixth inning and a wild pitch in the eighth inning. Despite their efforts, the Fort Worth Cats couldn't finish the comeback.

Stantrel Smith paced the Edinburg Roadrunners at the plate. Smith went 2-4, drove in one and scored two runs. He singled in the first innings and doubled in the seventh innings.

Fort Worth added a run in the top of the eighth but Julio Castro recorded the final four outs for his third save of the season and giving Edinburg the 5-4 victory.

Former Roadrunner Tim Haines (2-2) took the loss after allowing five runs, two earned, in six and two-third innings.

The Roadrunners and Cats will play the second game of their four-game series Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Ryan Smith (3-1) is expected to face James Giulietti (1-2) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
