Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release
SAN ANGELO, TX - In a match-up of two of the five best ERA's in the United League, it was Colts starter Logan Williamson who gave his team the best chance to win. Entering the game with a 2.78 ERA, the lefty from Pensacola, FL, rebounded from an ugly first inning and the Colts bullpen hung on to take a 6-5 win at Foster Field.
As has been the norm in this series, the Prairie Dogs jumped out to an early lead. However, unlike 3 of the first 4 games of this series, Abilene was unable to hold the lead.
In the first inning, the Prairie Dogs started the game with three consecutive hits from the top of their order. 3B Wilson Batista scored CF Jason Martin easily, but both he and RF Adam De La Garza moved into scoring position after CF Ronnie Gaines bobbled the base hit when he came upon it. De La Garza and Batista then came home on a 2-run double by LF Joe Weik that staked starter Brian Smith to a 3-0 lead before he stepped to the mound.
Entering the game with the 4th best ERA in the league at 2.73, Smith seemed to be in a strong position to pick up his 4th win of the season. In the first inning, CF Ronnie Gaines continued to create havoc on the bases as he's done all series. Gaines started the inning with a double then promptly stole third. He later scored on an error by C Chris Caves.
In the third inning, the Colts scratched out four runs against Smith. Danny Hernandez grounded out to start the inning, but Ronnie Gaines and JJ Sherrill followed with singles to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Daryl Jones then hit a ground ball to 1B Kyle Nichols that took a funny hop and got threw his legs for his third error of the season. Gaines scored on the play, and Sherrill would later score on a passed ball.
Brian Smith really began to lose control of the zone walking Cory Patton and Landon Camp consecutively to load the bases. Smith then uncorked a pair of wild pitches that scored Daryl Jones and Patton. Brian escaped further damage by striking out 3B Jason Crosland and Jamar Walton to get out of the inning.
Smith finished his outing after allowing 1B Daryl Jones to score on a SAC fly hit by DH Cory Patton. Jones had reached third on an errant pick-off attempt by Smith, it was the Prairie Dogs 3rd error of the game.
The Prairie Dogs threatened late to take the lead. In the eighth Joe Weik reached base on a dropped third strike and later moved to third on 1B Kyle Nichols' base hit. After Chris Caves popped out to 2B Danny Hernandez, Weik came in to score on a wild pitch by lefty Michael Hacker. The lefty from Folsom, CA was able to keep pinch-runner Gunner Glad on third as he got DH Nick Ochoa to pop out to SS Landon Camp.
Williamson finished 7 innings and allowed 8 hits 4 runs 2 walks and struck out a season-high 7. Closer Erik Draxton picked up his 7th save of the season on 8 pitches.
The Prairie Dog offense got 2 hits each from CF Jason Martin and 2B Zach Welch.
Abilene returns to action tomorrow night at Foster Field for game 6 of an 8 game series with the San Angelo Colts. Listen live to the First Financial Pre-Game show at 6:55pm and the first pitch at 7:05pm on 106.9 KLGD.
