Peoria, Ill. (January 11, 2009) - The Peoria Rivermen scored three goals in the final 17 minutes of regulation but couldn't complete the comeback in a 4-3 loss to the Manitoba Moose at Carver Arena on Sunday evening.

Physical play helped the Rivermen control much of the early part of the game and led to Eric Neilson dropping the gloves with Zack FitzGerald midway through the first period. They outshot the Moose 9-8 in the first but it finished in a scoreless tie.

Michael Grabner and Manitoba took over in the second period and jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Grabner broke the scoreless tie 1:10 into the frame only seconds after a power-play opportunity had expired. Only 2:18 later, Jason Krog was setup for his 10th goal of the season to give Manitoba a 2-0 lead.

At 12:51 Grabner struck again, this time on the power play. He walked out of the corner and ripped a shot over the glove of Ben Bishop for his 15th of the season. Bishop finished with 25 saves on 28 shots.

The Rivermen responded in a similar way to start the third period. With a power play early in the frame, Jonathan Filewich scored his fourth goal of the season and second with the Rivermen. Steve Wagner passed the puck into the slot and Filewich put it over the glove of Karl Goehring.

Filewich returned the favor to Wagner at 7:43. Wagner tracked down Filewich's rebound along the goal line and was able to bank it off Goehring from the side of the net.

Peoria was unable to tie the game over the final 12 minutes of regulation as Jason Jaffray scored an empty-net goal with 19 seconds remaining. Down by two, the Rivermen didn't give up and forced one into the net with 7.3 seconds to play. Steve Regier scored his 12th of the season after Cam Paddock and Matt Foy crashed the net and worked the puck into the crease.

The Rivermen are now 0-2-0 against the Moose this season and will next see Manitoba on the road on Feb. 27. The loss was the seventh in the last nine games for the Rivermen who are now 6-6-0 against Northern Division opponents.
