Late Penalty Turns Tide as Chiefs Lose in Overtime

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs controlled play for much of Friday night's game against the Everett Silvertips, but a late penalty opened the door for a Silvertips surge and the Chiefs fell in overtime, 4-3. Kailer Yamamoto led Spokane with two goals and an assist.

Everett struck first at the 3:14 mark of the second period as Brian King scored, taking advantage of a loose puck in front of starting goaltender Jayden Sittler to chip in his first of the season, with assists to Graham Millar and Devon Skoleski.

Yamamoto struck for his first of the night near the end of the second as Jaret Anderson-Dolan found him on a power play for a one-timer to beat Everett's Mario Petit.

Midway through the third period, Yamamoto found the net again, this time punching in a rebound to give the Chiefs the lead. The goal - his sixth of the season - was assisted by Markson Bechtold and Hudson Elynuik.

The Silvertips were on their heels until a major penalty to Elynuik gave them life at the 13:06 mark of the third. Everett scored twice during the five-minute man advantage as Patrick Bajkov and Noah Juulsen each scored to regain the lead a 3-2.

Another minor penalty at the 18:14 mark of the third period spelled disaster for Spokane but they managed to scored a shorthanded goal with Sittler pulled off the ice. Bechtold took a feed from rookie Ty Smith and fired a slapshot in from the left circle to send the Spokane Arena crowd into a frenzy.

The energy was short-lived, however, as Bajkov scored his second of the night off a backdoor feed from former Chief Dominic Zwerger just 24 seconds into the overtime frame.

The overtime loss pushed Spokane to 2-4-1-0 on the season while Everett jumped to 7-1-1-0. The Chiefs were 1-for-1 on the power play and 3-for-5 on the penalty kill. Spokane outshot Everett 30-21.

--- The Chiefs look to get back in the win column tomorrow night versus the Portland Winterhawks at Spokane Arena. It will be Leinenkugel's HOCKtoberfest and Leavenworth Trip Giveaway as pre-game food, drinks and festivities will begin inside the Arena at 4 p.m. Fans are encouraged to enter the HOCKtoberfest event at the VIP/Suite entrance on the northwest corner of the building.

Saturday night will also be the Chiefs' first live television broadcast of the season on SWX, available on Comcast channel 112 and over-the-air channel 6.2.
