Mississippi Braves News Release
BILOXI, MS - Biloxi's Trent Grisham broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning with a solo home run giving the Shuckers (33-21) a 5-4 victory over the M-Braves on Friday night at MGM Park. The third straight loss hands Biloxi the series win with the series finale coming on Saturday night at 6:35 pm.
M-Braves starter Andres Santiago battled early on Friday and worked around a bases-loaded jam in the second inning. The Shuckers got to Santiago in the third inning when Jake Gatewood hit a bases-clearing double to left giving Biloxi a 3-0 lead.
The Braves countered their three-run third with a three-run top of the fourth to tie the game. Alay Lago started the inning with a single, Travis Demeritte reached on an error, and Tyler Marlette singled to load the bases. Tyler Neslony brought home Lago with a groundout to put the Braves on the board. Carlos Martinez singled home Demeritte to trim the lead to 3-2, and Luis Marte singled in Martinez to tie the game at 3-3.
The Shuckers went back ahead 4-3 in the fifth inning as Gatewood raced home on a wild pitch from Santiago. The 28-year-old M-Braves starter yielded four runs on eight hits over 5.0 innings in the start, walking none for a third straight start and striking out two.
The Braves wouldn't go quietly on Friday as Daniel Lockhart belted a leadoff home run in the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4. Lockhart entered during a sixth-inning double switch. His third homer of the year was off Biloxi reliever Nick Ramirez (W, 7-0).
Braves' reliever Kelvin Vasquez retired all six batters faced in the sixth and seventh with one strikeout. Adam McCreery (L, 2-4) sat down the first two in the eighth, but Grisham hit an opposite-field homer to left placing Biloxi on top for good 5-4.
Southern League saves leader Nate Griep retired the Braves in order in the ninth to pick up his 18th save.
Martinez collected his first M-Braves multi-hit game and went 2-for-4 in the loss.
The M-Braves and Shuckers will wrap up the five-game series on Saturday night at MGM Park. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm with RHP Enderson Franco (1-4, 4.61) starting for the Braves and RHP Trey Supak (0-0, 3.60) will counter for Biloxi. The game can be heard on 103.9 WYAB and the free TuneIn Radio app.
The M-Braves return to Trustmark Park for a ten-game homestand beginning on Sunday, June 3 through Tuesday, June 12. For tickets or more information visit mississippibraves.com or call 888-BRAVES4.
