Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - Chih-Hsien Chiang hit a two-run home run off Dash closer Santo Luis in the top of the ninth inning to propel Salem (22-22) to a 5-4 win over Winston-Salem (21-22) on Sunday afternoon at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The win moved the Red Sox back into first place in the Southern Division and prevented the Dash from sweeping the three-game series.
The ninth-inning rally was aided by a throwing error by Dash third baseman CJ Lang that allowed Jon Hee to reach safely with one out. Chiang followed with his fourth home run of the season to supply Salem with their first lead of the afternoon. Prior to the go-ahead runs, Winston-Salem's bullpen had been exceptional in the series having tossed 12.2 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and recording 18 strikeouts.
Winston-Salem got off to a quick start against Red Sox starting pitcher Jose Capellan. Second baseman Dale Mollenhauer led off the first inning with a single and one batter later, right fielder Jimmy Gallagher belted a two-run home run to give the Dash a 2-0 lead.
Salem touched Dash starter Anthony Carter for a run in the top of the fourth when Jason Place and Mike Jones connected on consecutive singles to put runners on the corners to start the inning. Che-Hsuan Lin followed with an RBI sacrifice to cut the Red Sox deficit in half.
A manufactured run in the bottom half of the fourth helped the Dash push their lead back to two. Center fielder Salvador Sanchez walked to start the frame and stole second base. A ground out moved Sanchez to third and designated hitter Lee Cruz delivered an RBI sacrifice fly. Mollenhauer tacked on a run-scoring ground out in the fifth inning to give the Dash a 4-1 lead.
Once again, the Red Sox chipped away at their deficit when Will Vasquez tallied a two-run single with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to bring Salem within a run at 4-3. Red Sox reliever Josh Papelbon (3-1) worked a perfect eighth inning to collect the win while Derrick Loop record the final three outs to garner his sixth save of the season.
Carter lasted 5.2 innings and limited the Red Sox to three earned as he scattered 11 hits, but did not factor in the decision. Luis (1-2) blew his third save of the season and suffered the loss for the Dash.
The Dash will enjoy an off day on Monday before opening a three-game series with Myrtle Beach at BB&T Coastal Field. The opener is set for Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
The next home game for Winston-Salem is Friday, May 29 at 7 p.m. against the Kinston Indians. It is also the first of a ten-game home stand for the Dash at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Single-game tickets are also available for games at Wake Forest Baseball Park through June 17 and can be purchased online at www.wsdash.com or by calling the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
