Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Potomac upended Lynchburg 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Pfitzner Stadium to avoid being swept in the three-game weekend series. The Hillcats will take on the Salem Red Sox in the opener of a six-game homestand at City Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.

The P-Nats grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second. Michael Burgess drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on Sean Rooney's ground-rule double. Stephen King hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Burgess and put Potomac in front 1-0.

Potomac added to their advantage in the third. Dan Lyons led off the inning with a single. Boomer Whiting followed with a sacrifice bunt and Lyons raced home when Hillcats first baseman Matt Hague committed a throwing error after retiring Whiting on the 5-3 sacrifice. Danny Espinosa singled and Dan Nelson drew a walk from Lynchburg starter Ronald Uviedo. After Uviedo's balk enabled both runners to advance into scoring position, Christopher Marrero ripped a two-run single, extending Potomac's lead to 4-0.

Staked to a four-run lead by the P-Nats offense, Potomac starter Jeff Mandel frustrated Hillcats hitters throughout the afternoon. Mandel limited Lynchburg to two hits and no runs in six innings.

Lynchburg's offense was held in check by Potomac pitching until the ninth inning. Jared Keel socked an inside-the-park home run - the Hillcats third inside-the-park home run of the season - to reduce the deficit to 4-1. Following a strike out by Ray Chang, Alex Presley doubled to keep Lynchburg's hopes alive. But Potomac reliever Clint Everts retired Jose De Los Santos and Jordy Mercer to seal the victory for the P-Nats.

Mandel (6-1) picked up his sixth win of the season while Uviedo (2-2) took the loss for Lynchburg.

With the win, Potomac improved to 25-17 and moved within a game and a half of first-place Lynchburg in the Carolina League's Northern Division. The Hillcats fell to 27-16.

Lynchburg completed its seven-game road trip with a 4-3 record, highlighted with two wins in a three-game series with Potomac. The Hillcats return home for a six-game homestand against the Salem Red Sox and Potomac Nationals, beginning Tuesday night at City Stadium. Game one against Salem is slated for a 7:05 p.m. start Tuesday.
