Wilson Tobs News Release
HAMPTON, VA. - The Wilson Tobs plated two runs in the top of the ninth inning to secure their third straight win on Friday night as Kevin McGowan's double helped notch a 7-6 victory over the Peninsula Pilots at Historic War Memorial Stadium.
McGowan finished the contest 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and one run scored, while Caleb Dean and Jacob Nester each tallied two RBI for the Tobs. Dean, Rigsby Mosley, and Patrick Frick each added a pair of hits for Wilson, who recorded 13 hits on the night. Brenton Doyle hit his team-leading third home run of the season in the top of the ninth inning to knot the score 6-6.
Wilson starter David Harrison kept the Pilots off balance through the fifth inning on Friday as he took a no-hitter into the sixth in his first start of the season. Harrison would see the Pilots plate three runs in the bottom of the frame to trim the Wilson lead to 5-3.
The Tobs opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as Mosley and Frick tallied back-to-back singles against Peninsula. Carson Freeman would follow with a run-scoring single to right field to make it 1-0. A pair of RBI groundouts from Dean and Nester would increase the Wilson lead to 3-0.
Dean delivered a two-out single in the top of the fourth and would eventually find his way to third after stealing a pair of bases. Nester upped the Wilson lead to 4-0 with a single to right field as Dean scored easily from third. Dean laced his first triple of the season in the top of the sixth inning to score Mosley from first and give the Tobs a 5-0 advantage.
Peninsula started its comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning as a pair of RBI singles cut the gap to 5-2. The Tobs would turn to the bullpen in hopes of preventing any further damage. The Pilots added one more run in the frame off an error by the Tobs to close the deficit to 5-3. A run-scoring double by the Pilots in the bottom of the seventh inning knotted the game 5-5 as Peninsula capped a two-run frame.
With the momentum on their side, the Pilots rallied to take their first lead of the contest in the bottom of the eighth inning. Peninsula scored its sixth run of the game off an error by the Tobs at second base as a runner scored from second.
Following a pair of strikeouts that would put the Tobs down to their final out of the inning, Doyle went opposite field on a 1-2 pitch to tie the game 6-6 and breathe some life back into the Wilson offense. Drew Brooks kept the inning alive for Wilson as he would be hit by a pitch with the bases empty. McGowan delivered the go-ahead hit with a double down the right-field line as Brooks scored from first on the play.
Luis Acosta (1-0) fanned three of the four batters that he faced between the eighth and ninth inning after taking over with two outs and a runner in scoring position in the eighth. Harrison was handed with the no-decision after yielding three runs off two hits while walking four batters and fanning five.
The Tobs are back home on Saturday for a pair of seven-inning games against the Martinsville Mustangs. It will be Star Wars "Be A Hero" Night along with Slugger's Birthday and Mascot Mania at Historic Fleming Stadium. Gates will open at 5 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. Thanks to our sponsors BB&T, Thomas Law, Farm Bureau Insurance Agent - Clint Godwin, FastMed Urgent Care, Mobile Mini, and Make A Wish - Eastern North Carolina.
