Sharks Swept in Doubleheader
June 16, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release
It was a night to forget for the Sharks as Morehead City (11-2) came in and swept Wilmington (5-9).
In two games Wilmington scored just four runs on 10 hits and had eight errors. On the other side, the visitors scored 10 runs on 15 hits and had only one error.
There are two key parts of the doubleheader that will not stand out in the box score.
First, Morehead City scored at least a run in all six innings that the Sharks committed an error.
Meanwhile, the Sharks were unable to capitalize on the only error by the Marlins. In fact, only one Morehead City run came in an inning where the Sharks did not commit an error.
The other telling part of tonight's game is encouraging for the Sharks, despite dropping both games.
In both contests, Wilmington had the bases loaded and the tying run on base in either the second to last or last inning of the contest. While, this may look like just six runners left on base over two innings; instead, it shows that the Sharks were just one timely hit away from tying or taking the lead against the top team in the CPL.
In Game 1, the Marlins jumped out to a 5-0 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth. Wilmington put a run on the board, but Morehead answered in the top of the seventh to retake the five run lead. In the final frame, the Sharks pushed two across and had the bases loaded with two outs, down 6-3.
Wilmington could not find the timely hit though and fell 3-0. Zach Keenan (2-0) earned the win for five scoreless innings, Dylan Gibeau (0-2) lost for the Sharks and Brandon Marklund (2) earned his second save.
In Game 2, Morehead City again had an early 3-0 lead after three innings thanks to three Wilmington errors. The Sharks loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth after scoring a run to make it 3-1.
Then, Dawson Moser came out of the bullpen to get two outs and leave the bases loaded. The visitors then tacked on an insurance run thanks to two more Sharks errors.
Evan Lumbert (1-0) won tossing four scoreless innings, Sam Luchansky (3-1) lost for the first time and Kenny Wells (4) struck out the side in the seventh for the save.
Wilmington has now lost six games in a row, the longest losing streak of the summer.
