Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD, Maine - The Sanford Mainers returned to the diamond at Goodall Park after two consecutive rainouts for a game against the Vermont Mountaineers on Thursday night. After leading for a majority of the game, a late two-run home run from Vermont's Parker Landwehr was the difference in a 4-3 loss.
Jacob Edwards (UNC-Asheville) made his third start of the season for the Mainers, and turned in another good outing on the mound. Edwards kept the Mountaineers off the scoreboard for the first four innings before giving up one earned run in the fifth inning. He was then pulled in the sixth after going 5.2 innings, giving up only four hits, no walks, and four strikeouts.
Sanford got out to an early lead by scoring one run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the third, Ubaldo Lopez (Georgetown) doubled to lead off the inning and scored later on a passed ball. After another double from Lopez in the fourth, Evan Sleight (Rutgers) singled to bring him home again. Finally in the fifth, Freddy Rojas Jr. (UT-Rio Grande Valley) and Pierce Gallo (Clemson) doubled in consecutive at-bats to take a 3-1 lead to the sixth inning.
Louis Stallone (Arkansas) and Jacob Cicone (Lafayette) took the game over in the bullpen and kept Vermont off the board between them. Stallone threw two innings of one-hit ball, giving up no runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Cicone, in his debut, took over and worked around a leadoff runner getting on by striking out the final batter with two on base.
Sanford was led on offense by Lopez and Sleight, who each had two hits. Lopez doubled twice with two runs scored, and Sleight added two singles with an RBI.
Joe Joe Rodriguez (St. John's) took the loss on the mound after he gave up three runs in the top of the ninth inning, punctuated by the Landwehr home run. The Mainers had the tying run at third in the bottom of the ninth, but a groundout stranded him and ended the game for a 4-3 Vermont win.
The Sanford Mainers hit the road for their second straight against Vermont in Montpelier on Friday night.
