Everett AquaSox News Release
EVERETT, Wash - The Eugene Emeralds (9-2) completed the three-game sweep of the Everett AquaSox (3-8) with a two run eighth inning rally that broke a 1-1 tie, making the Frogs 1-5 in their first homestand of the 2011 season.
The Emeralds scored the first run of the game, which they did in each of the three wins over the Sox, on a two-out double in the top of the second inning by first baseman Zach Kometani that scored catcher Jeremy Rodriguez, who had walked in the previous at-bat, from first base.
Everett answered in the bottom of the second with a two-out RBI of their own, a mammoth solo home run to left field by second baseman Jorge Agudelo, his second of the season tying him for the team lead, which cleared the net on the outfield wall.
The game remained scoreless for the next five innings, with both starters lasting five innings giving up an earned run and striking out five each. In the sixth and seventh innings 14th round pick of the 2011 MLB Draft Cameron Hobson from Dayton University made his AquaSox debut, striking out every batter he faced in the two innings consecutively.
In the eighth inning the Sox sent out right-hander Bryan Leigh, who after retiring the first batter he faced allowed the next four batters to reach base. The Emeralds scored two runs in the inning, on an RBI double by Jace Peterson to right field and a single by Rodriguez through the hole to right. Leigh (0-1, 4.50 ERA) was attributed the loss in the game.
Everett attempted to answer with a one-out rally of their own when catcher Mike Dowd reached on a field error. When he tried to stretch the play to second base he was thrown out by right-fielder Kyle Gaedele on a close play which prompted manager Scott Steinmann to argue the call, and he was ejected from the game. The Emeralds retired the next four AquaSox batters in order to clinch Everett's fifth straight loss.
The Sox look to right the ship as the head up north to Vancouver to take on the Canadians in a three-game set. The Frogs will send out left-hander Tony Butler (0-1, 0.90 ERA), who has only allowed one run in ten innings this season and has totaled 14 strikeouts, against Vancouver right-hander Jesse Hernandez (0-0, 2.89 ERA) at 7:05 p.m.
