PASCO, Wash. - Brian Humphries capped a five-run sixth inning with a grand slam home run, lifting the Tri-City Dust Devils to a 9-3 victory over the Boise Hawks, before 2,041 fans at Gesa Stadium.
With the win, Tri-City moves into a first-place tie with Boise and Spokane, a 6-4 victor at home over Yakima.
The Hawks had early leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but could not hold off the Dust Devils. A throwing error by Willengton Cruz allowed Leo Reyes to reach second in the fourth, scoring on a Ryan Casteel RBI double to tie the score. One out later, Jordan Ballard singled, scoring Casteel with the go-ahead run, part of a three-run frame.
In the sixth, Humphries crushed a 1-0 fastball over the right field wall, his first professional homer to break the Hawks back.
David Hernandez went 2-for-3, including a solo homer in the win, as Chris Dennis tossed two and a third innings of scoreless relief for the win. Rafael Suarez tossed three innings, not allowing an earned run, for his second save.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the third on a Rafael Lopez sacrifice fly, then got a Willson Contreras RBI single in the fourth to make it 2-1, but could not hold on. Contreras and Pin-Chieh Chen each had two hits, while Joe Zeller tossed two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief in the loss.
Boise heads up the road to Yakima to open a three-game series with the Bears tomorrow night, as Luis Liria meets Randy Hamrick at 8:05 p.m.
