Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, PA - Blake Sabol lined a pinch-hit single into right field to bring the go-ahead runner to the plate for Altoona in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Curve's comeback fell short in a 5-3 loss to Bowie on Wednesday night.
Sabol, pinch hitting for catcher Dylan Shockley, lined the second pitch of the at-bat off Shelton Perkins into right field to score Matt Fraizer, who was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Connor Scott was held at third, putting runners on the corners with two outs. Andres Alvarez popped out to end the contest in the next at-bat as Perkins earned his first save of the season.
The Curve (22-25) scored one run in each of the last three innings. Fraizer opened his one-out at-bat in the seventh inning off Conner Loeprich (W, 1-1) with a triple into the right-center alley, his second three-bagger of the season. Matt Gorski then bounced into a fore out to bring Fraizer across. Brendt Citta hit a lead-off double in the eighth and later scored on a Jared Triolo single.
The Baysox (18-27) were able to bring three early runs across on Altoona starter Mike Burrows (L, 3-1). Andrew Daschbach hit a two-out solo home run, his seventh of the year, in the second inning. It was just the third home run allowed by Burrows this season. After a two-out walk and single from César Prieto and Joey Ortiz in the third inning, Cody Roberts lined an RBI-double into left field to score Prieto.
Burrows loaded the bases in the fourth inning with no outs after two walks and a single. He was pulled from the game after three innings completed, allowing a career-high matching seven hits and a new career-high four walks. Tahnaj Thomas entered the game and allowed a sacrifice fly to Gunnar Henderson to make it a 3-0 game. Thomas went two innings, allowing one hit on three strikeouts.
Travis MacGregor tossed three innings of relief, surrendering two insurance runs in the top of the eighth. After a lead-off walk to Maverick Handley, Cristopher Cespedes lined an RBI-double into left field. Two batters later, Henderson hit a single to score Cespedes. MacGregor allowed the two runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Austin Roberts delivered a scoreless ninth inning with one strikeout.
The loss marks the fourth-in-a-row for Altoona, matching a season-long losing streak. Bowie recorded 12 hits in the contest, with the Curve picking up nine.
Altoona continues its six-game series with the Bowie Baysox, Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m.. LHP Omar Cruz will take the ball for the Curve, with RHP Garrett Stallings slated for the Baysox.
