MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Sanford Mainers played the second straight game against the Vermont Mountaineers on Friday night at Montpelier Rec Field. After scoring five unanswered runs up into the eighth inning, Vermont scored six runs with two straight triples in the eighth inning to take the game by a final score of 11-7.
Alex McKenney (Maine) made the start in the game, and was knocked around in his four innings of work. McKenney gave up eight hits, five runs, three earned runs, two walks, and four strikeouts.
Marty Higgins (St. John's) drove in the first run of the game for Sanford in the fourth inning. With two outs in the inning, Higgins singled Jonny Barditch (Manhattan College) home to make it a 2-1 deficit. Sanford drove in two more runs in the next inning when Dom Freeberger (UNC-Asheville) hit a double to drive in one, and then ended up coming all the way around to score on a two-base error.
Trevor LaBonte (Maryland) was perfect out of the bullpen starting in the fifth, as he retired every Mountaineer hitter that he faced. LaBonte finished after three innings of shutout, no-hit ball with two strikeouts.
Facing a 5-3 deficit in the eighth inning, the Mainers put up a fight to take the lead late. The first two runs scored on a Ubaldo Lopez (Georgetown) single and a balk that brought home Freddy Rojas Jr. (UT-Rio Grande Valley) to tie the game. Cam Ridley (Eastern Kentucky) singled home Lopez to take the lead to the bottom of the eighth inning.
Vermont was able to storm back in the bottom of the inning, as they sent nine hitters to the plate to score six runs. The inning was defined by back-to-back triples that brought home three of the six Mountaineer runs in the frame to take an 11-6 lead.
Sanford was able to notch one more run in the ninth, but fell by a final score of 11-7.
The Sanford Mainers play their first doubleheader of the season tomorrow on the road against the Winnipesaukee Muskrats, and don't return to Goodall Park until Friday, July 2nd for a doubleheader against North Adams.
