Late Catfish Rally Falls Short in 8-6 Loss to Greensboro

GREENSBORO, NC— Five runs in the final three innings brought the Catfish close but not close enough as they fell for the third straight night tonight, losing 8-6 to Greensboro. The game was delayed with two outs in the second inning for an hour and ten minutes due to rain. Greenboro hit two more HR in the game and has hit seven in the first three games of the series. CF Jamie Hoffmann had a bases-clearing double for the Fish in the seventh to cut into the Grasshopper lead and DH Cole Bruce homered in the ninth inning for the second straight night. The Fish loss drops them to 23-37 in the SAL First Half while Greensboro climbs over .500 at 30-29.

With a 1-0 lead for Columbus in the second inning, the skies opened and delayed the game for 70 minutes. After the rain, the Grasshoppers scored three runs in the third inning when CF Jai Miller homered and LF J.T. Restko singled home a run against Catfish reliever LHP Chad Bailey. The Grasshoppers scored two in the fifth and two more in the sixth on a HR by 2B Cole Seifrig off Catfish LHP Wesley Wright. Wright hit the next batter and was ejected, prompting both benches to clear and warnings given to managers on both sides. In the top of the seventh, Greensboro RHP Nate Nowicki hit RF Ryan Russ and was ejected along with Grasshopper Manager Brandon Hyde. Later in the inning, Bruce doubled home a run and Hoffmann doubled with the bases loaded to cut the lead to 7-5 Greensboro.

LHP Carlos Alvarez became the fourth Catfish lefty to pitch tonight when he relieved Wright in the sixth and struck out seven batters, including five in a row at one point allowing one run. Trailing 8-5 in the ninth, Bruce homered on the first pitch off Greensboro RHP Chris Mobley to make it 8-6 Greensboro, which was the final as the Fish failed to score another run in the ninth. Tomorrow's 7:00 PM series finale at First Horizon Park pits RHP Rick Vanden Hurk for Greensboro against Catfish RHP Blake Johnson (3-3, 2.92 ERA), the Dodgers Co-Pitcher of the Month for May.
