Gnats reliever Campbell surrenders first runs of season in 9-7 loss to Rome

SAVANNAH, Ga. â Gnats reliever Brett Campbell surrendered his first runs of 2005 Thursday night, ending a professional baseball-best scoreless streak of nearly 29 innings. After entering the game with the Gnats up 7-4 in the top of the ninth, the righty struggled for the first time this season, allowing three Braves runs, and giving the 1,620 in attendance at Historic Grayson Stadium free baseball. Unfortunately, after 11 frames Savannah found itself on the short side of a 9-7 tally.
Campbell's collapse completed an implosion by the Gnats bullpen. Relievers Somer Gonzalez, Campbell and David Trahan allowed eight runs, frittering away an early 7-1 Gnats lead. The deciding run for the Braves came off the bat of Mark Jurich who deposited a two run bomb over the right field wall.
Gnats backstop Devin Ivany, serving as the designated hitter, homered twice, and starting catcher Luke Montz blasted his eleventh tater to lead Savannah's offensive charge. It was the second time in 2005 Ivany blasted two homers in a game, turning the trick in an April 22 Gnats win in Savannah.
The bullpen's problems also wasted another solid Savannah start. Right hander Collin Balester gave up only one run on two hits over five innings of work.
The Gnats will look for a series split in the fourth and final game of the set Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Historic Grayson Stadium. Following the game, fans will be treated to the Gnats fourth Fireworks Extravaganza of 2005.
