Sanford Mainers News Release
Despite a heartbreaking loss to the Newport Gulls last night 12-10, the Mainers turned their offense around.
Tonight they hoped to continue that offensive ability in New Bedford, facing the Bay Sox for the fifth time this season.
They ve already beat the Bay Sox three times out of the four meetings this season, and the Mainers did again tonight, beating them 11-7 on 22 hits.
The Mainers started off the game quickly, getting five straight hits with one out, including an RBI double by Jordan Hagel and an RBI single off the bat of Jordan Betts.
Jason Inghram made his fourth start of the year for the Mainers. He gave up a lead off double to Evan King, but retired the next three hitters to get out of the inning.
Once again, the Mainers plated two more in the top of the second. With two outs, Ino Patron got his second hit of the game and quickly moved up to second on a single by Hagel.
Patron came around to score on the next play, as Betts hit an RBI single to left.
The score sat at 3-0, but the Mainers weren t done. Jose Torralba hit a chopper to short that took a bad hop, flying over Peyton Hart s head for an RBI single.
Inghram shut the Bay Sox out through the next five innings, allowing only two hits in that time.
Heading to the top of the sixth, the Mainers put four more runs up on the board. With one out, Will Cooper and Troy Black singled putting runners on first and second. Patron recorded his second hit of the night, hitting an RBI single to left scoring Cooper.
Hagel came to bat and repeated what he did the night before in Newport, hitting a three-run home run to left field putting the Mainers up 8-0.
New Bedford would finally get some runs of their own, answering with four in the bottom half of the sixth.
Inghram started the inning getting Zach Stone to ground out to Black at short, but gave up a single and a double to Alex Black and Alex Baldock respectively.
Matt Horan came into the game in relief, but this is where the trouble continued.
Black and Baldock came around to score after Horan served up a double to Zack Graczyk.
Andy Lalli and Peyton Hart hit the third and fourth doubles of the inning, while recording an RBI each reducing the Mainers lead to 8-4.
At the top of the seventh, the Mainers added to their lead again. Gavin Stark started the inning with a single, and after a strike out, was joined by Nate LaPointe when he took a four pitch walk from Isaac Greenspon.
During the next at bat, Stark hustled around third to score on an RBI single by Cooper.
Hagel continued his offensive success, hitting his second double of the game, scoring LaPointe, and Black, who reached on a fielder s choice.
The game was back in the hands of the Mainers 11-4, but the Bay Sox fought back with three more in the home half of the seventh inning.
King reached on an error by John Gorman and moved up to second on a wild pitch, but stayed there on a walk given to Stone.
With two outs, Baldock hit his second home run of the season, good enough for a three run total bringing the game within four.
That s all the runs both teams scored for the remainder of the game.
The Mainers collected 22 hits with the help from Hagel who went four for six with six RBI, and Betts who went four for five with two RBI. Stark and Cooper also put up three hits of their own.
Sanford improves to 5-11 on the season and will hope to continue their offense tomorrow night as they face the Mystic Schooners for the first time in Mystic, Connecticut. Game time slated for 6:05pm. EJ Ashworth expected to take the hill for the Mainers.
