Landmesser Called Up to Marlies

SOUTHAVEN --- The Memphis RiverKings of the Central Hockey League announced today that all-star defenseman Derek Landmesser has been called up to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. It is the first call-up to the AHL for Landmesser, who leads the CHL in defensive scoring with 53 points. He will sign a Professional Try-Out Agreement with the Marlies, the top minor league affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL, and is expected to play tonight (Thursday) when the team faces the Cleveland Barons in Cleveland.

"I am looking forward to this opportunity," Landmesser said after the RiverKings 4-3 loss in Austin Wednesday night. "It is every minor league player's goal to move up and play at a higher level. Whether it is for just a couple games or longer, I plan to make the most of it."

Landmesser is in his tenth season of pro hockey and his fifth with the RiverKings. He has been to the CHL All Star Game in each of the last four seasons and holds the franchise record for points in season by a defenseman (66 in 2004-05) and career points by a defenseman (279). The Thunder Bay, Ontario native is also third on the All Time RiverKings Games Played (287), Assists (232) and Points Lists.

While this will be his first experience in the AHL, Landmesser played 11 games in the IHL with the Manitoba Moose in the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons.

Following the game in Cleveland tonight, the Marlies return to Toronto for a game with Portland on Friday and Binghamton on Saturday. The Marlies are 26-20-3 and in fourth place in the AHL's North Division.

The RiverKings return home for two games this weekend with Youngstown on Friday and Odessa on Saturday. Both games start at 7:05 at the DeSoto Civic Center.

Upcoming promotions: On Friday, February 10, the first 1,500 fans receive a Ford Key Chain and on Saturday, February 11, the first 3,000 fans receive Cellular South CheerStix.
