Omaha Lancers News Release
Ralston, NE - CJ Dodero scored two goals in the first period and added an empty-net goal in the third period to propel the Sioux City Musketeers to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Omaha Lancers in front of a sellout crowd of 3,529 on Friday night inside Ralston Arena. It was Omaha's second-straight sellout crowd to start the season.
Dodero scored his first goal of the night and second of the season just 3:31 into the game. Pierce Pluemer moved into his offensive zone and sent a pass across the hash marks to an awaiting Dodero who sent the puck over a sprawling Lancers' goaltender Zackarias Skog for the 1-0 Sioux City advantage.
Just under midway through the first period Dodero struck again for his second of the night. Connor Valesano came into the offensive zone right wing circle and found Dodero on the left side. Zackarias Skog tried to get back to his right but the puck was sent top shelf over his right shoulder to give the Musketeers a 2-0 lead. Assists on the goal were credited to Valesano and Matt Steeves at the 9:56 mark.
In the second period after killing a penalty, the Lancers had their best chance of the night up to that point. Brian Williams was hauled down on a breakaway after exiting the penalty box. He took the puck down the left side, cut to the center of the ice, and was tripped on the chance. On the penalty shot attempt, Williams was stopped by left leg pad of Cam Gornet to keep Sioux City's lead at 2-0.
Eeli Tolvanen added to the Musketeers' advantage towards the end of the second period. Matt Steeves took the puck inside the neutral zone and moved quickly down the right side of the ice into his offensive zone. Steeves sent the puck across the high slot and Tolvanen lifted it over the shoulder of Zackarias Skog to give Sioux City a 3-0 lead with exactly five minutes to go in the middle frame. Assists on Tolvanen's fourth tally of the year were given to Steeves on the pass and Connor Valesano with his second point of the game.
In the third period the Omaha Lancers pulled Zackarias Skog with just over four minutes left in the game and down four goals. CJ Dodero took the puck inside the neutral zone and shot in his third of the night with 3:04 to go in the game for a 4-0 lead on his third of the night and fourth of the year.
The 4-0 lead held up as the final to end Omaha's three-game winning streak and end the Musketeers' three-game losing streak. Zackarias Skog picked up the loss stopping 25 of 28 on the night.
The Omaha Lancers are back on the road tomorrow night as they visit the Tri-City Storm for the second time this season. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. inside the Viaero Event Center and fans can listen live beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the Valpak Pregame Show on "The Mighty" 1290 KOIL, Mighty 1290 KOIL Mobile APP, www.mighty1290koil.com, and FASTHockey.com.
