Omaha Lancers News Release
RALSTON, NE - On day one of the 2015 USHL Draft, the Omaha Lancers selected five forwards, two defensemen, and a goalie for Phase I, which is limited to only 1999 birth years. In Phase II, the Lancers leaned more towards the blueline as seven forwards, ten defensemen, and two goaltenders were drafted.
"Our scouting staff has done a great job this season," said head coach Brian Kaufman. "We added some elite players who can step into our league this season and have an impact. We also drafted some great young players who will play for our organization in the future."
To start Phase I on Monday night, Omaha went with Luke Boka (Victory Honda U18) in the second-round, 27th overall. After signing Brannon McManus to a tender contract recently, the Lancers neutralized their first-round pick. In addition to Boka, Jason Robertson (Don Mills Flyers AAA), Adam Kadlec (Boston Jr. Bruins U16), and Noah Cates (Stillwater High School) were the forwards chosen by the Lancers in Phase I. Defensively, Omaha pulled in Drew Hunter (Oakland Jr. Grizzlies U16), Ben Pirko (Selects Hockey Academy U16), and James Long (St. Louis AAA Blues) while adding goaltender Sam Metcalf (Waterloo High School) in the eighth-round to finish out day one.
"I thought the draft went really well," Director of scouting Rick Comley added. "We were able to address some of our current needs as well as build for the future."
Yesterday morning saw Phase II as Omaha began the first three-rounds taking defensemen off the board. Nick Jenny (Ohio Blue Jackets U18), Jake Massie (Kimball Union Academy), and Johan Steen (Lone Star Brahmas) were the first three picks and alone combined for 70 points this past season.
Following the first three selections, Omaha drafted seven forwards who totaled over 181 points in their respective seasons. Kohen Olischefski (Yale Prep), Mitch Perrault (Ohio Blue Jackets U18), Nathan Krusko (Minnesota Magicians), Austin Lemieux (Pittsburgh Penguins Elite U18), Tyler Rock (Holy Family Catholic High School), Tyler Madden (Avon Old Farms High School), and Kyler Yeo (Hill-Murray High School) all were tabbed by Omaha during Phase II.
After taking three defensemen to start off, the Lancers collected seven more before the day came to a close. Jacob Bryson (Loomis Chaffee School), Jason Smallidge (St. Thomas Academy), Carson Moniz (St. Thomas Stars), Cody Fleckenstein (Nichols School), Christian DiCesare (Omaha AAA), Zachary Hart (Belle Tire U16), and Will Brophy (Westminster Prep) all got the call before round-sixteen ended for Omaha.
To finish out the 2015 USHL Draft, Omaha added two goaltenders in Phase II. Peter Thome who has a .931 save-percentage for the Chicago Fury U18 squad was drafted 76th overall by Omaha while Austria native Max Haselbacher was chosen in the eighth-round. Haselbacher was in net for Omaha AAA this past season.
