Lancers Roll By Gamblers For Third Straight Win

March 31, 2007 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Omaha Lancers News Release

Andrew Conboy finished off the scoring in a three-goal third period with a power play goal and an empty net tally, as the Lancers claimed a four-game season sweep over the Green Bay Gamblers and won their third straight contest with a 5-3 victory at the Mid America Center on Saturday, March 31st. Conboy scored goals number 22 and 23, plus power play goal number ten and game-winning goal number ten with his red-light tandem in the final frame.

Green Bay opened the scoring with an unassisted goal from Steve Silva at the 10:02 mark of the second period for a 1-0 lead.

But, goals from Mark Olver (Conboy and Matt Thurber assisting) at 13:27 and Pat Schafer (Nick Petrecki and Ben Arnt assisting) at 13:51 gave the Lancers a 2-1 advantage later in the period.

Sergia Somma fashioned a 2-2 tie late in the second period with his 29th goal of the season.

In the third period, Barry Almeida opened the scoring for the Lancers with his tenth tally of the year at 2:53, assisted by Thurber and Adam Comrie.

But the Gamblers tied it up again with a goal from Michael Borisenok that knotted the game at 3-3 at 12:54.

The Lancers then answered with Conboy scoring on the power play, assisted by Olver and Thurber 35 seconds later at 12:59, which became the eventual game-winning goal, and Conboy scored again on a feed from Olver and Chris Hepp with six seconds left for the clinching tally into an empty net.

On the power play, the Lancers scored twice on eight chances and Green Bay scored once in eight opportunities. Omaha out shot the Gamblers by a 35-26 margin, with winning goaltender Michal Valent (10-0-1) making 23 saves and Gambler netminder Nicholas Graves (3-8-0) stopping 31 shots on net.

East Division opponents were not able to slow down the Lancers much in the regular season, as Omaha finished the year against the East 21-1-2. Only a shutout loss to Waterloo and shootout losses to Cedar Rapids and Chicago blemished an otherwise perfect 2006-07 regular season campaign against the East.

The win was also the team's 11th straight home victory, dating back to January 16th, and the third straight home game where the Lancers rallied from behind to win on home ice.

The victory capped off the most productive month of the regular season for the Orange and Black. The Lancers were 9-1-1 in March for 19 points.

A key West Division week lies ahead for the Lancers, as they host Tri-City on Tuesday night, at 7:00 PM at the Mid America Center, then travel to Sioux Falls on Friday night and Sioux City on Saturday night. Both weekend games will also start at 7 PM.
