Lancers Edge Buccaneers In Shootout
Barry Almeida's goal as the final shooter in a six-round shootout gave the Lancers a come-from-behind, 3-2 victory over the Des Moines Buccaneers on Friday, March 30th at the Mid America Center. Almeida was a factor in all three Lancer goals, assisting on Chris Hepp's score at the 14:28 mark of the second period, then scored the game-tying goal at 4:27 of the third period of play, a goal that sent the contest into overtime and the resulting shootout.
Des Moines opened the scoring when Derek Elliott scored his seventh goal of the season at 9:27 of the first period of play. The Lancers tied the game at 14:28 of the first period, when Chris Hepp poked in a goal past Bucs' goaltender Matt Dalton, assisted by Brett Bruneteau and Almeida, for a 1-1 tie after twenty minutes of play.
Des Moines scored the only goal of the second period, when Jeff Petry's blast from the right point was deflected in by Richard Purslow for a 2-1 advantage after two periods. Kyle Bailey was also given an assist on the goal.
However, Almeida's shot from the left side in the third period beat the Buccaneer goaltender for the tying goal at 4:27, assisted by Bruneteau and Jarmo Jokila.
There was no scoring in overtime, although the Lancers had a power play opportunity they failed to score on. That set up the shootout, where the teams traded a pair of goals through five rounds. When Lancer goaltender Michal Valent stopped Aaron Palushaj's attempt in the sixth round, Almeida stepped and beat Dalton for the final result.
Neither team scored on the power play, with the Lancers scoreless in nine power play chances and the Buccaneers scoreless in six opportunities.
Valent (9-0-1) was the winning goaltender with a 30-save effort, while Dalton (26-13-8) stopped 25 shots in the contest. Des Moines out shot the Lancers for the contest 32-28.
Next up for the Lancers is their final game of the regular season against an East Division team, when the Green Bay Gamblers come to the Mid-America Center for a 7 PM game on Saturday, March 31st.
