Lancers Rebound With Sunday Win Against Green Bay

The Lancers rebounded from a shootout loss the night previous in Cedar Rapids to defeat the Green Bay Gamblers 4-2, before 3,648 fans at the Mid America Center on Sunday, February 18th. The win moved the Lancers into a first-place tie with Sioux City in the USHL West Division standings and also into a first-place tie with Sioux City and Waterloo for the overall league lead. The win also kept a streak going of now 11 straight games without a regulation-time loss.

Patrick Schafer opened the scoring for the Lancers in the first period with a shorthanded goal, taking a feed from Mark Olver and beating Gambler goaltender Nicholas Graves for a 1-0 advantage at the 11:54 mark of the first period. The goal was Schafer's 13th of the season and his second shorthanded score of the year. Patrick now has five goals and nine points in his last six contests.

Ben Arnt scored the first of his two goals for the Lancers as the first period ended, sliding in a feed from Matt Thurber at the 20:00 mark for a 2-0 advantage at the first intermission. Corey Toy also received an assist on the goal.

Arnt scored the second of his pair of goals (the eventual game-winner) next at 15:40 of the second frame, converting a play around the crease from Jake Marto for his eighth goal of the year and first game-winner. Thurber also assisted on the goal.

The lead became 4-0 when Olver scored into the top shelf, his 19th of the season, at 17:54 of the middle period. Brett Bruneteau and Jarmo Jokila assisted on Olver's goal, which gave him eight goals and 18 points in his last ten games.

Green Bay rallied with a pair of goals for the final margin, as Nick Tabisz blasted a shot that beat Lancer goalie Michal Valent at 18:35 of the second period, unassisted for a 4-1 margin, and his ninth of the year. Brian Haczyk completed the game's scoring with his ninth of the year, assisted by Channing Boe at 14:06 of the final frame.

The Lancers out shot the Gamblers by a 29-17 margin for the game, including 11 first period shots, while holding Green Bay to only three shots on goal in the third period. Omaha was 0-for-8 on the power play, while Green Bay was 0-for-6 with the man advantage. The Lancers took seven penalties for 17 minutes; Green Bay was whistled nine times for 21 minutes of penalty time.

Valent won his fifth straight game as a Lancer goaltender (5-0-0) with 15 save performance. Graves took the loss (1-5-0) with a 25 save effort.

The win was also the Lancers' seventh straight against the Gamblers, dating back to October of 2005. Omaha is 15-1-1 against East Division teams this season.

Next up for the Lancers will be a weekend trip to Chicago, playing the Steel Friday and Saturday night, February 23rd and 24th. Game time each night in Chicago will be at 7:30 PM.
