Omaha Lancers News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD - As if outscoring their opponents a combined 9-0 in the first weekend of the season weren't enough, the Omaha Lancers extended their terrific start to the 2013-14 United States Hockey League (USHL) campaign Friday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota when the Lancers parlayed a 25-save performance from goaltender Cole Bruns, the Prairie Grove, Illinois native's third consecutive shutout, into a 4-0 pasting of the defending Western Conference champion Sioux Falls Stampede. With the win, the Lancers improved to 3-0-0 on the season and with six points, climbed into a share of first place in the USHL's Western Conference standings, alongside the Stampede.
After the first period slid by scoreless, Rochester, Minnesota native and future Nebraska-Omaha Maverick Tyler Vesel buried his second goal of the season, a power-play marker at 10:31 of the middle frame assisted by Gage Hough and Jake Randolph, to make it 1-0 Lancers.
Then in the third, an even-strength, center-point one-timer from rookie defenseman Jimmy Schuldt, the St. Cloud State recruit's first-career USHL goal, found twine at 4:11 on feeds from Ryan Tait and Luca Frigo, to extend the Lancer lead to 2-0. Vesel's second power-play tally of the night, a rebound score at 11:27, made it 3-0 Omaha thanks to slick feeds from Randolph and Hough before Frigo potted the cherry on top, yet another extra-man score, assisted by Brian Williams and Tait to establish the Lancers' final margin of victory at 4-0.
Despite multi-point nights from Hough (2A), Randolph (2A), Tait (2A), Vesel (2G) and Frigo (1G, 1A), the story of the game Friday was without a doubt Bruns' performance. Turning in a vast selection of highlight-reel saves along the way, Bruns denied a single-game personal season high 25 Sioux Falls pucks en route to his third consecutive shutout in the Omaha cage to start his second season as a Lancer.
Also notable Friday was Omaha's performance on special teams, as the Lancers paired a perfect 4/4 performance on the penalty kill with a similarly impressive 3/4 showing with the extra skater. Including Friday's performance vs. the Stampede, the Lancers are an ideal 13/13 while down a man in their first three games of the season combined.
Next up for the Lancers, it's a Friday rematch with the Stampede on October 11th at Ralston Arena with the opening faceoff set for 7:05 pm. Full coverage of Friday's tilt begins at 6:50 with the "Valpak Pregame Show" on the Lancers' flagship station, "The Mighty" 1290 KOIL with Lancers broadcaster Tony Brown providing the play-by-play.
In 2013-14, the five-time Anderson Cup and seven-time Clark Cup Champion Omaha Lancers drop the puck on their 28th season in the USHL. Season ticket packages for the Lancers' second campaign at the state-of-the-art Ralston Arena are available now starting at just $12.50 per game!
