Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, IA- The 2013-2014 season couldn't have started much better for goaltender Christian Frey and the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The veteran goaltender turned aside all 17 shots he faced Friday night to collect his second straight shutout in Dubuque's 4-0 win over the Green Bay Gamblers at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Jason Ford added a pair of goals, including the game-winning tally, to help Dubuque improve to 3-0-0.

Friday's game was a bit of deja vu for Dubuque from last Saturday's 4-0 Opening Night win over Sioux City. Friday night, Frey was again stellar between the pipes, and Dubuque spread the scoring out once again, getting goals from the elder Ford, Dylan Gambrell, and Brett Boeing.

Dubuque broke the scoreless deadlock 5:30 into the game's middle frame. After talking a minor penalty, Dubuque forward Jason Ford jumped out of the penalty box and tracked down the puck on the left wing. Ford darted down near sideboards and cut to the net, firing a shot that hit the pads of Green Bay netminder Jared Rutledge but skipped into the goal to make it 1-0 Fighting Saints. The tally was the Ford's first USHL goal and was assisted by Dylan Gambrell.

In the third period Dubuque struck three more times. Gambrell scored a goal of his own, one-timing a beautiful feed from Eric Robinson past Rutledge to make it 2-0 Fighting Saints at 8:21. Robinson set up shop behind the goal and found an open Gambrell in the low slot for the insurance marker.

The Fighting Saints added to the lead with a 4-on-4 goal at the 17:07 mark. After killing off a 4-on-3, Karson Kuhlman found himself on a two-on-one with Brett Boeing. Kuhlman dished a pass to Boeing on the right wing and the forward made no mistake, firing his first USHL goal into the empty half of the net to make it 3-0. Jason Ford would add an empty net tally for his second goal of the game at the 19:02 mark to give Dubuque the victory.

With the win, Dubuque improved to 3-0-0 while Green Bay fell to 2-1-2. Frey improved to 2-0-0 on the season and has stopped all 37 shots he has faced this year.

Dubuque's penalty kill stayed perfect on the season, as Green Bay went 0-for-6 on the man-advantage. Dubuque as 0-for-4 on the powerplay. The Fighting Saints outshot Green Bay 30-17.

Dubuque is off tomorrow and returns to action at the Mystique Community Ice Center next Friday versus Muskegon at 7:35. That evening is, "Omsk Sweet Omsk," a celebration of the Fighting Saints Bronze Medal performance at the 2013 Junior Club World Cup in Omsk, Russia.
