(York, Pa.) - Lancaster scored eight unanswered runs in their final three trips to the plate as the Barnstormers opened the 2016 edition of the War of the Roses presented by PNC Bank with a 10-2 win over the York Revolution on Monday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The Revs (15-10) will get three more chances against the Barnstormers (11-13) this week in the rivalry-opening series.
Tied 2-2 in the Barnstormer half of the sixth, Charlie Cutler cracked a one-out double to the right field corner, chasing York starter Kelvin De La Cruz from the game. Jeff Kobernus slashed the first pitch from reliever Beau Vaughan into right for an RBI single, advancing to second on the throw. Travis Witherspoon followed with a run-scoring hit of his own and after stealing second came home himself on Kevin Ahrens's double, making it 5-2 Lancaster.
The Barnstormers took out a big insurance policy in the seventh, scoring four runs on just one hit, taking advantage of five walks from reliever Wes Alsup. Josh Bell homered to lead off the eighth to give the game its final margin.
Tanner Peters (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings in relief. De La Cruz (3-2) was tacked with the loss with three runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings, his longest outing of the year.
Lancaster stuck a run on the board in each of the first two innings. Josh Whitaker got the scoring going with an RBI double in the first, while Travis Witherspoon belted a two-out triple to plate a man in the second.
Andres Perez jump-started a sixth-inning rally with a leadoff walk, and Telvin Nash followed with a single up the middle. Joel Guzman tagged a base hit into right center to bring home Perez and break up the shutout. Two batters later, Keith Castillo lifted a fly ball to center deep enough to bring home a hard-charging Nash and bring the Revs even at 2-2.
Isaias Tejeda cranked out another multi-hit game, going 3-for-5 with a double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Tejeda is hitting .537 (22-for-41) since beginning the stretch on May 4.
Nash finished 1-for-2 with a run, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch.
Kobernus reached each of his first four times at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, RBI, stolen base, walk, and three runs scored. Witherspoon and Ahrens each finished with two hits, one going for extra bases, and a run driven in.
Notes: Tejeda is one game back of the Revs' longest hitting streak of the season, a Jason Repko 11-gamer to open the campaign. York and Lancaster continue the War of the Roses presented by PNC Bank on Tuesday when the Revs' Mike McClendon faces the Barnstormers' Bryan Woodall. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile app beginning at 6:40 p.m. with Darrell Henry and Will DeBoer on the call.
