May 16, 2016 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(New Britain, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (7-16) were defeated by the New Britain Bees (11-12) 6-1 in seven innings in the opening game and 2-1 in ten innings in the nightcap of a single admission doubleheader at New Britain Stadium on Sunday as the Bees complete a weekend sweep in a battle between in state and Liberty Division rivals. New Britain sweeps a series from an Atlantic League foe for the first time in franchise history.

In Game One, Bridgeport Starting Pitcher David Anderson (0-2) was tagged with the loss, lasting just two and one third innings, surrendering six runs on eight hits, walking two, striking out three, hitting a batter and throwing a wild pitch. New Britain Starting Pitcher Brian Dupra (2-0) registered the win, pitching five innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out one.

New Britain put a crooked number up on Anderson in the home half of the second inning, sending ten batters to the plate, scoring five runs on five hits to take a commanding 5-0 lead. The five run outburst was the most given up by Bridgeport in a single inning in 2016, surpassing the four runs allowed two other times, the most recent coming on May 8th at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard against the Long Island Ducks. After Jonathan Roof led off the frame with a single, Jon Jones drove him home with a triple for the game's first run. The next four Bees runs off Anderson would all come with two men out. James Skelton plated Jones with a run scoring single. Craig Maddox drove in a pair with a base knock, and Jon Griffin laced an RBI single scoring Jovan Rosa to give the home team an early five run cushion. Bridgeport scored their only run off Dupra in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by Josh Vitters, plating Jose Cuevas after he led off with a double. That was as close as the 'Fish would get as they dropped the opener. Luis Hernandez led the way for Bridgeport with a pair of base knocks.

In Game Two, Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Jimmy Patterson impressed once again despite registering a no decision, tallying five and one third innings, allowing just one run on four hits, walking and striking out two. New Britain Starting Pitcher Cole Johnson also did not factor in the game's final outcome, pitching six innings, surrendering just one run on three hits, walking two and striking out one, lowering his ERA to 1.45. Brian Moran (0-2) suffered the loss out of the bullpen, giving up one run on two hits, walking one, striking out one, and throwing a wild pitch. Craig Stem (1-2) was victorious in relief, allowing just one hit while striking out one in four batters faced.

New Britain took the early 1-0 lead off Patterson in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Maddox, scoring Brandon Chaves. The 'Fish evened up the contest at one off Johnson on a two out run scoring single by Hernandez, plating pinch runner Connor David from second base. With one out in the bottom of the tenth, Roof singled off Moran, and the winning run was on board. Moran's wild pitch moved Roof into scoring position, and after Jones was intentionally walked, Nick Murphy struck out. Anthony Hewitt followed with a hot smash to the left side of the infield that was knocked down on the backhand by Rodriguez, who attempted to gun down Jones out at second, but he beat the throw to the bag, and without hesitation Roof raced home and the relay from Jose Cuevas was too high as Roof scored the winning run and the celebration was on as the Bees came away with the 2-1 walk off victory in ten innings. Wilkin Ramirez had two hits to lead the Bluefish on the offensive side.

Bridgeport returns to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday, May 17th when they welcome in the reigning Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Champion Somerset Patriots for a four game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:12 P.M. It will be Two Dollar Tuesday, with hot dogs priced at just two dollars each, along with another two dollar special as well.
