Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers rapped out 15 hits on Saturday evening but could not piece together enough offense in a 6-5 loss to the Long Island Ducks in the middle game of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.
In the meanwhile, Sugar Land edged the Road Warriors, 2-1, cutting the Barnstormers Freedom Division lead back to two games.
David Washington's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the decisive blow for the Ducks, who managed only five hits on the night. Joe Gardner (3-3) walked Travis Snider to start the inning. He struck out Ford for the first out, but the lefty-swinging Washington took Gardner to the opposite field for his eighth homer of the year and a 6-5 lead.
Lancaster picked up its final two hits of the night in the eighth inning, but Dennis O'Grady struck out Carlos Garcia on a full count pitch for the final out.
In the ninth, Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez walked Rico Noel with one out. Snider made a diving catch on a Blake Gailen liner for the second out and barely missed doubling Noel off first. Noel stole second and third, and Anderson De La Rosa walked to set K.C. Hobson against Rodriguez. Hobson fouled out on the first pitch to end the game as Rodriguez earned his ninth save.
It appeared the Barnstormers were on their way to a huge night at the plate in the second inning. The first six batters smacked hits off Matt Larkins (5-1) with runs scoring on RBI singles by Hobson, Nate Coronado and Vladimir Frias. A bunt single by Garcia loaded the bases with nobody out, but Larkins battled back to get Darian Sandford to foul out and Rico Noel to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, keeping the 'Stormers lead at 3-1.
After Long Island scored a run in the bottom of the second on a walk, infield single and throwing error, the Barnstormers added their final two runs of the night on solo homers by Gailen and Grant Desme in the third. Snider pulled the Ducks back within a run with a two-run homer to right center in the bottom of the inning.
Jonathan Albaladejo (5-2) makes the start for the Barnstormers on Sunday afternoon against Ducks lefty Bennett Parry (3-0). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 1:15.
