Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers have had to import plenty of pitching to replace nine arms lost to foreign teams and Major League organizations in 2016.
Most recently, the 'Stormers have picked up former Bridgeport Bluefish left-hander Luis Gonzalez, the 19th man to start on the hill for the club this season. The left-hander had gone 2-4 in seven starts for Joplin of the American Association, his first work in summer baseball in the US since 2011.
Gonzalez fired one-hit baseball for eight innings on Thursday evening as the Barnstormers captured their third straight from the Long Island Ducks, 9-2.
The lefty from Santurce, PR threw 41 pitches over the first two innings, walking two and striking out three. Over the next six innings, he fired only 67 more, retiring the side in order on eight or fewer in three different innings. He retired 20 of 21 at one point before walking Fehlandt Lentini with two outs in the eighth.
Gonzalez' no-hit bid was spoiled by third baseman Matt Wessinger, who opened the fifth with a double to left field, stole third and scored on a grounder to second by Carlos Hughes.
The Barnstormers provided all the offense Gonzalez would need in the bottom of the first. Caleb Gindl led off with a walk. Trayvon Robinson smoked a grounder at first baseman Tyler Colvin, who stepped on the bag for an out but hit Gindl with his throw to second. Gindl headed to third as the ball deflected away. K.C. Hobson followed with a two-run homer, his sixth long ball of the homestand, to right center.
Kevin Ahrens kept the uprising alive with a two-out single floated into shallow right. Mike Jacobs doubled down the left field line on a ball barely out of the reach of the diving Chris Scura, scoring Ahrens. Jacobs, in turn, crossed the plate as Mike McDade doubled into the left field corner.
Lancaster extended the lead in the second on a two-out single to right by Robinson, a stolen base and Hobson's double down the right field line. Josh Bell added a towering home run to center in the fifth, and the Barnstormers tacked on three more in the eighth, one on a double by Dean Wilson and one on a single by Robinson.
With the score, 9-1, the Barnstormers lifted Gonzalez to look at the 34th pitcher of the season, knuckleballer Zach Staniewicz. The right-hander allowed a single by Delta Cleary, Jr. and RBI double by Lew Ford before retiring the side in order to close the night.
Lancaster opens a three-game series at Sugar Land Friday evening. Joe Gardner (1-0) will take the hill for Lancaster against lefty Aaron Thompson. Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 7:45 EDT.
NOTES: Hobson finished the homestand 11-for-28 with six homers and 11 RBI...He is tied for third in the league in home runs, one off the lead...The Barnstormers won the season series against Long Island, 11 games to nine...Ahrens went 26-for-62 (.419) in the season series...Lancaster homered in every game on the homestand, launching 12 total.
