Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, saw a trio of pitchers hold the Southern Illinois Miners to just a run on nine hits at Sprenger Healthcare Stadium on Tuesday evening, and came away with a 2-1 victory in the series opener.
The victory for the Crushers (9-13) was their second in a row, marking back-to-back back victories for the first time since May 24-25, while the loss for the Miners (8-14) snapped a three-game winning streak.
Starting pitching and solid defense stole the show for most of the contest. Lake Erie's starting pitcher Jordan Kurokowa turned in his finest start of the season, allowing just a run on five hits while fanning six over seven innings, but didn't factor into the decision.
Lake Erie was able to strike first, capitalizing on a two-out extra base hit in the bottom of the first. Jordan Dean reached on a one out infield single and he came around to score the game's first run on Sean Hurley's RBI double off the wall in center field.
The Miners were able to answer with some of their own two-out thunder in the top of the third. London Lindley reached on a one out single through the left side of the infield before stealing second base a few moments later. Lindley came around to score the game tying run on Nolan Earley's two-out single to right.
The Crushers took advantage of the only Southern Illinois error of the contest in the bottom of the eighth inning to regain the lead. Parker Norris began the inning with a pinch hit single to center field. Josh McAdams followed with a single through the left side of the infield. Norris advanced to third, but the throw from left was cut off by the third baseman, Ryan Lashley, who then threw to second in an attempt to get McAdams who was on his way to second. Lashley's throw ended up in center field, which allowed Norris to score.
Southern Illinois had chances to score in the final two innings but could not cash in. They had the bases loaded in the eighth inning with two outs, when Keegan Ghidotti (1-2) induced a groundout to end the inning, and Chandler Jagodzinski (6) pitched out of a bases loaded situation with two outs in the ninth to snag the save.
Ghidotti came away with the victory for the Crushers after tossing a scoreless eighth inning, allowing a trio of singles and fanned one batter. Jagodzinski snagged the save after tossing a scoreless ninth inning. Southern Illinois starter Corey Sessions (0-4) took the hard luck loss, allowing two runs, only one earned on six hits over seven innings of work with four strikeouts.
Hurley's RBI double in the first inning extended his hitting streak to four games, while Dean went 3-for-4 on the night to lead the Crushers offensively. Connor Oliver went 0-for-4 and saw his six-game hitting streak come to an end in the process.
The Crushers will continue their three-game series with the Southern Illinois Miners at Sprenger Healthcare Stadium on Thursday night. Right-hander Adam Quintana (2-2, 3.60) will make the start for the Crushers. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
