Lake Elsinore Uses Two-Out Rally to Down 66ers 5-2

Modesto, CA - The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino scored two runs in the second inning at Lake Elsinore on Wednesday but they proved to be the Sixers lone runs of the series thus far as IE fell to the Storm 5-2. After Inland Empire starter Simon Mathews got two quick outs in the third inning, Lake Elsinore (62-66, 28-30) sent six consecutive batters to the plate with five of them scorning as the Storm now taken the first two games of a three-game series.

Richie Fecteau led off the second getting struck by a pitch from Padres' righty Bryan Mitchell, who was making his fifth injury rehab start for the Storm. Two batters later Cole Taylor smashed a double off the top of the wall in center putting runners at second and third. Mario Sanjur followed with a two-run single off Mitchell (1-2) making it 2-0. Mitchell went 6.0 IP and gave up five hits, two walks an struck out eight. Simon Mathews (4-5) rolled through the first two frames and got two quick outs in the fateful third but Nate Easley lifted a double to left. Eguy Rosario then reached on a throwing error by Richie Fecteau at third putting runners at first and third. Edward Olivares then reached on a RBI swinging bunt up the third base line making it 2-1. Luis Torrens followed with a game-tying RBI single to right. Mathews then walked Brad Zunica (who finished 2-2, 2B, 2BBs) and was lifted in favor of RHP Jorge Tavarez. Chris Baker then smashed a three-run double to make it 5-2. All five runs were charged to Mathews, they were all unearned. Torii Hunter Jr had two hits for the Sixers (64-64, 31-26) including a double.
