Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks defeated the Schaumburg Flyers 4-1 on Tuesday evening at Newman Outdoor Field behind an efficient one-run, six-hit complete game from starting pitcher Jake Laber. Laber threw only 85 pitches, 18 balls and 67 strikes, on the night.
The visiting Flyers got on the board first in the second inning. Laber gave up a pair of singles to Schaumburg's Richard Mercado and Mike Mooney. Second basement Joe Pauley then drove in Mercado from second base on a single of his own.
The RedHawks were unable to provide Laber with any offense until the eighth inning. Mike Coles led off by singling and stealing second. With first base open, Schaumburg manager Mike Busch elected to intentionally walk Fargo-Moorhead's red hot Nic Jackson. Flyers starter Brett Harker had thrown 121 pitches, so Busch called for hard throwing rightly reliever Josh Giles from his bullpen.
Giles faced only one hitter and walked RedHawks cleanup Jess Hoorelbeke, loading the bases for Alan Rick. Schaumburg's Busch again went to his bullpen, giving the ball to lefty Reid Price. Rick hit a line drive back up the middle off of Price, scoring two and sending the reliever to the showers after only one hitter of his own.
Busch elected to bring in righty Brian McCullough to face Fargo-Moorhead third baseman Eric Campbell, who can into the game hitting only .150 against right-handers on the season. Campbell hit a slow roller down the third base line that came to a stop just inside the chalk, thirty feet from the batter's box, to again load the bases. Cory Patton followed with another two-run single up the middle for the RedHawks to give them a 4-1 lead before second baseman Carlo Cota hit into a double play to end the inning.
Schaumburg's Harker took the loss despite matching Fargo-Moorhead's Laber pitch-for-pitch through seven innings. He gave up two runs on five hits in 7.1 innings of work, striking out one and walking four. The Flyers' first three spots in the lineup were held hitless on the night while each of their final six batters each collected a single in the game.
The RedHawks will look for a series sweep tomorrow night starting at 7:02pm at Newman Outdoor Field. Alain Quijano (0-2) will get the ball for Schaumburg while Fargo-Moorhead's T.J. Stanton (0-1) will make his first start of the season. The first 1,500 fans through the gates will receive a free RedHawks baseball cap courtesy of Orthopaedic Associates.
