Postgame Quotes

LA GALAXY HEAD COACH GUILLERMO BARROS SCHELOTTO

On Portland's efficiency and the LA Galaxy's defensive mistakes:

"Yes, it's possible. If we talk about this game, and you analyze the game, they had the most efficiency. They have good quality players. I think the game was very weird because the first shot they had; they scored a goal. Then they scored the second goal. They changed obviously. When you are winning, you get confidence. When you are losing, you lose confidence. But the team kept its shape, always trying. We got some options. We got the 2-1 and we almost got the 2-2. Then we start to play the game, the real game. But again, in the second half, the few possibilities they had they put the third goal. About the game, about the players, they played very smart. We tried, we could find some options and maybe we failed in that moment. We made some mistakes, some individual mistakes in the defense. But if you check the goals, we were always organized. They never counter attacked and then they scored, we always kept our shape, even if you check every goal, we had more players defending then they had attacking. But we recognize that Portland has players in their national team and have good quality."

On whether he recognizes this is a low point in the season:

"Yes. You know, we suffer a lot in the defense but maybe it's not the moment to analyze right now because we have a game in three days, and then we have another game in three more days. So we need to keep working as much as we can because we don't have time but it's a moment to work, to keep our [chin] up and try to get the next three points."

On whether he has seeing improvements in the last three games or if the same mistakes are being made repeatedly:

"I think we need to be more consistent in the defense. We need to improve in that place. Today we got three goals and we lost. Every game was different. The other day, we lost with a penalty. The game was tied, but we recognize we need to improve in the defense. After that, the team fought, the team had options to score but you know, it's difficult to find the positives when you lose. Always trying to get the best when you are losing is hard, but the defense is something where we need to improve a lot."

On Julian Araujo's play:

"He scored a wonderful goal, he fought. He is young. We have young players. Today for example, [Nick] DePuy, [Julian] Araujo, Efrain [Alvarez], [Ethan] Zubak, but maybe they can make some mistakes in the defense, I am talking about Araujo and DePuy. But its normal with the young players. They go down then go up in the same moment because they are trying to get a little more consistent during their life. But I am happy with him. He scored a beautiful goal, he fought as we wanted. Obviously made some mistakes but in general I am happy with him."

[Translated from Spanish]

On how to fix the team's problems without having to point out individual mistakes:

"We have to fix them because we have a lot of games left and we have the aspiration to add points and be able to win and get ourselves in a playoff position. It's true what you say, but as a coach you can't come here and speak about individual names or players. You have to accept it, take responsibility and work from now until Saturday so that we don't make those mistakes again. Today marks five games we lose in a row, we also won four games in a row. The truth is, we can't seem to find the balance. We will look for it the next game. We trust the process. We have to keep our chins up and fight."

LA GALAXY DEFENDER DANIEL STERES

On defense view of loss:

"This one felt a little different. This one was mistakes by us. We gave them the first - I don't even know what was - first 6 shots that they had, they scored 5 of those on easy mistakes by us, really, or just lack of communication, whatever it was. So that's on us. But the game overall, I don't think was a bad game. I think we locked some of those mistakes up. We actually played well and created a lot of stuff, we were organized defensively until those last minute or last second plays. So yeah, I'm taking full fall on this one, there's were way too many mistakes from us on the back and they were efficient."

On whether this is the low point of the season:

"I don't know, I don't think so. Like I said although we are pissed off and we're not happy. We gave up 6 goals; it's never going to cut it out here. I think we put in a good shift, I think guys had good effort, it think coming back 3 different times to score goals showed a little bit of our character. And I think this is something you can separate from the individual or collective mistakes we had defensively tonight. So I think altogether we can take some positives from this, I mean 6 goals is never, I'm never happy when you get 6 goals. Do I think it should have been 6 goals game - no - but that on us. I think we can take some lessons form this tonight and move forward."

On lesson learned from game and on figuring out what's wrong:

"I mean, I don't think it's going to be too difficult. When we look back at some of these goals we gave up tonight. I think those lessons will be pretty easy to figure out. 'Cause seemed, at least on the field, it seemed like they were simple mistakes between 1-2-3 whatever 4 guys. I think we'll be able to learn those lessons, but that what we have to do we have to move forward. We got another game; we got 3 more games coming up. We're going to have to train and figure these things out on the field and I don't think we are going to drive ourselves crazy but we need to get it right. We can't waste any time not getting it right anymore."

LA GALAXY MIDFIELDER SACHA KLJESTAN

On what he saw that lead to the score:

"I saw that we got punished by a good team. Portland is obviously very good, they finished a lot of their chances today. They have a good team; if you give up bad balls or don't defend well at the top of your box, then good teams will punish you. Have to give credit to Portland for putting six goals in the back of the net. We showed a little bit by trying to get ourselves back in the game. You have a game plan, but when you go down 2-0, things start to get thrown out the window and the game starts to open up. We got a goal back and had a lot of momentum going into halftime and we came out of halftime with a really positive attitude, but we gave up a goal within 90 or 120 second again to go down. It's like every time we got ourselves back in the game, they put a ball in the back of the net soon after and it kept breaking our back. Emotionally, I think it took a toll on us giving up that many goals and we weren't able to claw back into the game."

On whether this team can correct or if their heads are down:

"Of course everyone's head is down a little bit but we've got to find a way to claw ourselves out of this hole that we're in a little bit right now. If you look at the table, if you could run 2-3 games in a row with wins, it puts us back in a playoff position. MLS is like that sometimes. I can think back to when the Galaxy played in MLS Cup against New England, I'm pretty sure New England went on a 7-8 game losing streak that season before turning around and going on a run, so crazier things have happened in MLS. So we just have to refocus ourselves for a game again in a few days and try to get on a winning streak here. We've got to do everything we can."

On which team the Galaxy is; the team that went on four game winning streak or the one in current streak, or both:

"Unless you're Messi or Ronaldo, you're never really as good as everybody says you are and you're never really as bad as everyone says you are. We've got to find a way to look ourselves in the mirror. We've got to find a way to claw ourselves back. I don't think we're the best team in MLS and I don't think we're the worst team in MLS. We've got to find a way to get something done and get results. Whatever way possible, however it takes for us, we have to do it. I don't have all the answers right now, I wish I did, but I've got to watch the game back and figure some things out."
