Lancaster, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino opened a seven-game season-ending road trip with a 5-2 win at Lancaster on Tuesday. Kyle Tyler (3-0) and won his third consecutive outing since being promoted from Low-A Burlington and Tyler Smith held the JetHawks down in the late frames to earn his first Cal League save.
Inland Empire (53-80, 27-37) broke a scoreless tie in the third when Devin Davis smoked a one-out solo homer to left off JetHawks starter Garrett Schilling (8-8). Gleyvin Pineda then singled and scored two batters later on Orlando Martinez' double to right for a 2-0 lead. The Sixers struck again in the fourth as Zane Gurwitz peppered a line-drive single to right to open the inning and came home on Torii Hunter Jr.'s triple to left. Michael Cruz, playing in his first game with IE since a hand injury on May 31st, singled home hunter for 4-0 lead. The Sixers made it 5-0 in the sixth as Spencer Griffin doubled and came home on Cruz' second RBI single of the game. Tyler was rolling through five scoreless but got touched for a pair in the bottom of the sixth; Luke Morgan lined a solo homer out to right, his second of the year, getting Lancaster (66-66, 32-32) on the board. The JetHawks added an unearned run on a sac fly from Taylor Snyder. Tyler went 6.2IP allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits with no walks and four Ks. Tyler Smith tossed 2.1 scoreless frames for his save. The final outs were recorded with the tying run on deck as Smith got soft liner off the bat of Matt McLaughlin which Sixers' shortstop Leonardo Rivas snared and then doubled off base-runner Casey Golden at first to end the contest. The Sixers improved to 9-15 against the JetHawks on the year.
