SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League announced today that Manitoba Moose defenseman Justin Kurtz has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending February 2, 2003. Kurtz recorded four goals and three assists for seven points in four games last week for the Moose.
Kurtz snapped a 24-game goal-scoring drought with the game-winning goal and an assist in a 4-3 victory over Chicago on Jan. 28, then scored again the next night as the Moose downed the Wolves, 5-4. He picked up an assist in a 3-2 loss to Hamilton on Friday, and then netted a pair of goals, including the winner in overtime, and assisted on another as the Moose bounced back with a 3-2 win over the Bulldogs.
In recognition of his achievement, Kurtz will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Winnipeg Aboriginal Sports Achievement Centre (WASAC) in Kurtz's name.
Kurtz, a Winnipeg native and a former draft pick of the NHL's Jets in 1995, is in his fifth season with the Moose organization. In 44 games this year, he has recorded eight goals and 21 assists for 29 points. He signed with Vancouver in 2001 and made his NHL debut with the Canucks last season, appearing in 27 contests.
