Ottawa Champions News Release
OTTAWA - RHP Jordan Kurokawa gave up three hits and became only the third Champions pitcher to toss a complete game shutout, as Ottawa beat the Salina Stockade 13-0 on Saturday night at RCGT Park.
"Kurokawa was really in complete command tonight," said Champions manager Hal Lanier following the win. "He had great control with all of his pitches. The complete game helped the bullpen get a night off and be ready for the morning."
Kurokawa was making his fourth career start for the Champions and only allowed four Stockade hitters to reach base while striking out seven.
It was quite the turnaround for the Honolulu, HI native. He gave up ten hits in each of his first two career outings, but has now joined Phillippe Aumont and Wilmer Font as the only two Champions pitchers to throw shutouts.
Kurokawa was aided by the Ottawa offence early and often. RF Steve Brown clubbed his first home run of the season to right field in the first inning, plating DH Sebastien Boucher in the process. Boucher himself was fantastic on the day, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
"It was good to see the extra base hits," said Lanier. "It was good to see the offence come back and get a lot of runs and get in the lead first for a change."
Each Champion reached base at least once, with Boucher, Brown, CF Chase Harris and 1B Vinny Guglietti recording multi-hit games. SS Kyle Zirbes had three RBI thanks to a bases-clearing triple in the fourth inning.
The Champions will look to take the series against the Stockade on Sunday, June 10, with first pitch being scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Ottawa will then hit the road for back-to-back three-game sets with New Jersey and Sussex County.
