Kuemper Clamps Down On Oil Kings With 5-0 Shutout

Red Deer, AB - Red Deer Rebels goalie Darcy Kuemper stopped all 31 Edmonton Oil Kings shots he faced and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tallied a goal and an assist en route to a 5-0 victory at the ENMAX Centrium on Friday night.

Despite putting 31 shots on the board compared to the Rebels' 39, the Oil Kings couldn't beat the netminder Kuemper and found themselves on the losing end of the 5-0 decision. Red Deer got a pair of goals from Brett Ferguson, as well as singles from Nugent-Hopkins, Andrej Kdrna and Aaron Borejko.

After giving up three goals in the opening 20 minutes, Oil Kings goalie Laurent Brossoit - who posted a shutout out of his own when Edmonton beat Red Deer 3-0 on Nov. 20 - surrendered one goal in each of the final two frames for a 34-save performance. There were a pair of scraps in the game, as Edmonton's Travis Ewanyk and Ryan Dech duked it out with Josh Cowen and John Persson, respectively.

Despite the shutout loss, the Oil Kings remain in sixth place in the WHL's Eastern Conference with a 22-24-0-3 record and 47 points, since the Swift Current Broncos also lost, 6-3 to the Saskatoon Blades. The Broncos sit at 23-29-0-1 and also have 47 points, but they've played four more games than Edmonton.

The Oil Kings return to Rexall Place on Saturday to host the Eastern Conference rival Prince Albert Raiders (19-26-2-3) at 7 p.m. It's Michael Jackson Night as a tribute to the late King of Pop. The Oil Kings are then on the road for four games next week in the United States against the Seattle Thunderbirds, Tri-City Americans, Portland Winterhawks and Everett Silvertips.
