Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
The Sioux Falls Canaries welcomed two new faces to the team during a 5-2 loss to Lincoln on Saturday night.
Dimitri Kourtis and Will LaMarche, pitchers who were signed ahead of Friday's series opener, did not allow a hit while working the final three innings of the game.
Kourtis worked two scoreless frames for Sioux Falls, facing just five hitters with the help of a double play. The 25-year-old Georgia native had played with the SaltDogs for his entire pro career, starting in 2017.
Kourtis attended Mercer University in Macon, Ga. before sitting out a year just after college with an injury.
LaMarche worked the eighth for Sioux Falls, and lit up Haymarket Park's radar gun. The right-hander sat in the high 90s with his fastball all inning, topping out at 98 mph.
A former 9th-round draft pick, LaMarche was in the San Francisco Giants' system at Double-A Richmond earlier this year. The Pleasanton, Calif. native turns 27 on Tuesday.
The Canaries took an early lead in Saturday's contest, with David Bergin and Chris Grayson each driving in a run in the third.
From there, the SaltDogs scored five straight runs. Back-to-back solo shots by Christian Ibarra and Alex Glenn tied the score at 2 after three innings.
Glenn gave the SaltDogs the lead for good with a three-run home run in the fifth. He finished with four of the SaltDogs' five runs batted in.
Former Canary Joe Bircher worked six strong innings for Lincoln to earn the win. The right-hander allowed two runs on 10 hits in the outing, walking two and striking out six.
Canaries starter Mark Seyler, making his first start as a Canary, allowed five runs (four earned) over five innings of work. He walked three and struck out four, taking the loss.
ON DECK
The Canaries and SaltDogs meet for a rubber game Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Miles Nordgren will get the start for the Canaries; Brad Thoutt will take the mound for Lincoln. Birds fans can tune in on 98.1 FM and AM 1230 KWSN or online at kwsn.com.
