WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes beat the Chicago Dogs 3-1 at Shaw Park on Saturday evening.
The game was called due to rain after six and a half innings.
Winnipeg took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a two-out, infield single from Matt McCann that scored Dexter Kjerstad.
Goldeyes' starter Tyler Herron (6-8) was credited with a complete game win, allowing one earned run on six hits over seven innings. Herron walked none, struck out five, and went to a three-ball count only three times in 26 batters faced.
Herron escaped a first and second, one-out jam in the top of the first when first baseman Josh McAdams speared a Joe Benson line drive to start an unassisted double play.
Herron faced first and second with one out again in the second, but worked out of the frame when Stephen Perez grounded into a double play started by Tucker Nathans. Beginning with the Perez double play ball, Herron retired eight consecutive batters and 13 of the next 14.
With two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the fifth, Reggie Abercrombie reached on a single. With Abercrombie in motion, Nathans doubled off the wall in right, scoring Abercrombie with the Goldeyes' second run. Josh Mazzola followed with a line drive single to centre that scored Nathans.
Chicago's lone run came in the top of the seventh on a two-out, RBI single from Tony Rosselli.
Dogs' starter Jared Carkuff took a complete game loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in six innings. Carkuff walked three and struck out three.
Carkuff started the bottom of the seventh and ran a full count on Tyler Baker before heavy rained forced a stoppage in play. The game was called shortly thereafter.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Kevin McGovern (3-8, 4.40) faces former Major League left-hander Scott Barnes (4-3, 3.15).
