Fresno Falcons News Release
FRESNO, Calif. â Fresno Falcons defenseman Kory Mullin has decided to retire from the sport of hockey to begin pursuing a career as a fire fighter.
A former member of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, Mullin finished a seven-year professional career by spending his final two seasons in Fresno. He registered 51 points (6g-45a) in 102 games as a Falcon and was the club's leading playoff scorer among defenseman each of the past two years. During last season's Taylor Cup run, the 27-year old native of High Prairie, AB, ranked second in playoff scoring among league defensemen with eight points (1g-7a).
Mullin has already begun his education to become a fire fighter. He attends classes five days a week at the College of the Sequoias Fire Academy in Visalia. "Even though I believe I can still compete on the ice, I made the conscious decision to stop playing now because of all the time and education required to become a fireman," said Mullin. "I'll miss the game, but all last season I'd hear a fire truck go by and knew that's where I wanted to be."
"The most important time of year in hockey is during playoffs and Kory Mullin has elevated his game in the postseason maybe better than anybody I' ve had during my three years of coaching," said Falcons head coach Blaine Moore. "This opportunity he's taking advantage of reflects the type of person he is. He's a team first guy, someone you like to be around, and he' s going to be successful at whatever he does. I feel lucky to have had him on my team for two years."
Mullin is the second Falcons player from last season's Taylor Cup Championship squad to retire. Greg Spenrath announced his decision to stop playing hockey a week ago but will remain with the organization as an assistant coach and color commentator on the team's radio broadcasts.
The defending Taylor Cup Champions kick-off the upcoming 2002-2003 season at home on Oct. 18 in a Taylor Cup Finals re-match with the Idaho Steelheads. Single-game tickets go on sale on Sept. 23 and season ticket packages are still available for as little as $100. Call the Falcons offices at 485-PUCK (7825) for more information.
